Westfield hospital names new chief

Rodney Buchanan

The Allegheny Health Network has named Rodney Buchanan as hospital administrator for AHN Westfield Memorial Hospital, effective immediately.

Buchanan has been serving as interim administrator since July 2021. He succeeds hospital president, Karen Surkala, who has taken a position as chief operating officer at AHN Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie.

Buchanan graduated from the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, earned a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degree from Grand Canyon University, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in nursing from that institution.

Buchanan previously served as nursing director at AHN Saint Vincent, where he managed Emergency Services, Behavioral Health and Respiratory Therapy. He also previously managed Critical Care Services, the Cardiac ICU, Cardiovascular ICU and the telemetry floors. Prior to Saint Vincent, Buchanan was active in the emergency medical services and functioned as a flight nurse for ten years serving the Western PA and NY regions.

He was named Allegheny Health Network Nurse Leader of the Year in 2019, and Saint Vincent Hospital Nurse Leader of the Year in 2017.

At Saint Vincent, he served on the Professional Practice Committee, Operations Chief of the Covid Command Center, Director of Nursing Council, the Performance Improvement Oversite Committee, the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, and more.

He is a member of the Emergency Nurses Association.
