Job cuts may impact UPMC Chautauqua

Fiscal worries appear to be starting to mount at UPMC.

This week, the health care giant reported it was aiming to cut more than 1,000 staff members in the coming weeks, which is 1% of its 100,000-member workforce. The news of the reductions comes more than a month after the non-profit reported an operating loss of $198.3 million in 2023.

UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown, which is part of the Pittsburgh-based operation, could be impacted by the looming cuts.

Paul Wood, vice president and chief communications officer, said the health-care provider and insurer is continuing to face the realities of a still-evolving, post-pandemic marketplace. “To ensure that UPMC continues to thrive as a leading, successful healthcare organization, limited reductions are occurring throughout the health system primarily among non-clinical, non-member-facing, administrative staff through attrition, closing of open positions, elimination of redundancies and other actions,” he said in a statement. “This realignment will not alter UPMC’s investments in our communities, facilities, commitment to clinical care and research, strategic growth, or to offering those throughout our workforce industry-leading benefits.”

Wood said those affected by the downsizing will receive enhanced severance pay with benefits coverage provided.UPMC operates 40 hospitals and more than 700 doctors’ offices and outpatient centers in western and central Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, and around the globe.

Brooks-TLC Health Network in Dunkirk is a stand-alone health-care facility that is currently working with Kaleida Health that is based in Buffalo.

According to the most recent 990 tax returns filed that are available through Guidestar, UPMC Chautauqua had 1,060 employees and reported a $6.4 million surplus in operations with $161 million in revenue. In 2021, the same location at 207 Foote Ave. in Jamestown had a $12.5 million loss on $124 million in revenues.

As a 277-bed hospital, UPMC Chautauqua offers more than 15 specialties, with several locations in the city.
