City of Dunkirk seeking historian

The City of Dunkirk is accepting letters of interest for the position of City Historian. The salary for this position is $750 per annum.

The position involves the responsibility of compiling information and data, the maintenance of records concerning the history of the city, and includes research and consultation functions for and with persons interested in city history.

Examples of typical work activities include: gathers historical material from old records, old books, etc.; files such material in fireproof safes or vaults; may write or edit articles for publication concerning the city’s past and present history; on request, give lectures to students and interested groups; handles correspondence and requests for information concerning the city’s history.

In addition, the historian files an annual report, in the month of January, to the mayor and to the state historian of work accomplished during the preceding year.

Lakeshore Humane Society to hold spaghetti dinner fundraiser

The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Blessed Mary Angela Parish Social Center (St. Hedwig’s), 324 Townsend St., Dunkirk. Tickets are $8, and are available from LHS members or at the door.

Take-outs will be available.

There will also be 50/50 and basket raffles. This event is to benefit the work of the LHS as it helps orphaned animals.

Soup supper Monday night in Westfield

Looking for a way to beat the winter chill? Circle Monday on the calendar. The Westfield Memorial Hospital Regional Auxiliary is inviting everyone to come to its first-ever soup supper. The event will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 49 S. Portage St., Westfield, between 5 and 7 p.m.

Fifteen delicious homemade soups will be on the menu, made by the members of the WMH Auxiliary Board.

Those attending may sample as many as they choose. Rounding out the menu will be bread, beverages and an array of homemade desserts.

The cost for this chill-chasing meal is $6 for adults and $3 for children. There is a flat $20 fee for families of four or more. All proceeds will be used to further the WMH Auxiliary refurbishing projects at the hospital.

Forestville absentee ballots available

Absentee ballots for voting are available in the Forestville Village Clerk’s Office, 18 Chestnut St., Forestville. There is now a drop box for water bills and tax payments next to the clerk’s office outside door for the residents’ convenience.

Dunkirk Town Board workshop, special meeting Tuesday

The Dunkirk Town Board will hold a workshop and special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the town hall, 4737 Willow Road.

The purpose the meeting and workshop is to continue review of the employee hand book.

Relay for Life Team Lucky 777 to hold chicken barbecue

Relay for Life Team Lucky 777 will host a Chiavetta’s Chicken Barbecue on Sunday.

It will be held at the First Ward Falcon Club on Lake Shore Drive in Dunkirk. It will run from noon until 5 p.m.

Tickets are $8.50 and can be purchased by calling 366-7292 or 785-5190. Eat in or take out. Deliveries can be made with the purchase of 10 or more and ordered by Feb. 24.

The first meeting of the new photography club, organized by Niles Dening, will be held on Monday at 6:15 p.m., at the Anderson-Lee Library.

The club is open to anyone with a genuine interest in photography.

Fredonia Farm Festival dates Aug. 23-25

The Fredonia Farm Festival announces this year’s festival dates and officers. Melissa Thompson is festival chair, Jodie Cain is secretary and Kim Robbins is treasurer. A meeting of the Dunkirk Common Council Public Works Committee scheduled Tuesday morning was postponed.

Pancake brunch fundraiser Sunday

A pancake brunch fundraiser will be held Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Villenova Grange, Balcoms Corners in South Dayton. Diners can bring nonperishable food items or cash to donate and receive their meals at half price.

Training session on identification and reporting of child abuse Saturday

A state-mandated training session for professionals on identifying and reporting child abuse, maltreatment and neglect will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the LoGuidice Educa-tional Center, D Building, at 9520 Fredonia-Stockton Road in Fredonia.

The training is required for all persons applying for a provisional or permanent certification of license valid for administrative or supervisory service, classroom teaching service, or school service. Therefore, in addition to teachers and school administrators, the mandate affects school physicians, nurses, therapists and others in the fields of healthcare and education.

Participants should bring their license or certificate number with them if possible. A State Education Department certificate of completion will be provided for each course participant. Ripley Central School preschool registration March 7

Ripley Central School will hold registration for preschool for the 2013-2014 school year on March 7 in the Principal’s Office. To be eligible for preschool, a child must turn 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2013. Spaghetti dinner to aid World Vision

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at SUNY Fredonia is fundraising for World Vision’s caregiver kit building project. These kits are filled with medical supplies to enable caregivers to tend to those living with AIDS in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

To do this project, InterVarsity needs to order at least 50 kits at $22 each. A spaghetti dinner will be held Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. at Harvest Chapel. The dinner costs $7 and includes a beverage, spaghetti, salad, and a roll. Children 4-10 can eat for $4 per plate and children under 3 eat for free.

US Coast Guard Auxiliary at the

Buffalo Bills Boat Show

USCG Auxiliary Division 3, Buffalo will host a booth at the Buffalo Boat Show, Wednesday to Sunday at the Bills Field House in Orchard Park.

Information will be available covering all aspects of boating safety including schedules for boating safety courses. Visitors may pick up literature describing membership opportunities in the Auxiliary mission which provides support and assistance to the Active Duty US Coast Guard in its duties of safeguarding the lives and property of recreational boaters.

Auxiliary activities include operational assistance to USCG in both on-the-water and shore based missions. Membership is open to any U.S. citizen who is age 17 and above.

Friends of Anderson-Lee Library will hold

mid-winter book sale

The Friends of Anderson-Lee Library are accepting donations for a mid-winter book sale Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2. All donations may be dropped off at the library in Silver Creek and will be accepted until Feb. 26. The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, 12-5 on Friday, and 10-2 on Saturday. Paperbacks will sell for 50 cents and hard covers will sell for $1.

At this time, the group is not accepting encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias or any kind of textbook. These items do not sell and take up valuable space. Please be sure to only donate books that are clean and are free of rips and tears and musty odors. Dona-tions may be dropped off during operating hours. The library is open Monday and Tuesday, noon to 8 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds from the annual book sale are used to enhance library collections.

CASA auction fundraiser Wednesday

The Chautauqua County Court Appointed Special Advocates will hold a live auction fundraiser at Unique Sales & Auctions Wednesday at 6 p.m.

This fundraiser will assist with the recruitment, training, and support for the volunteers. Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 4.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.91/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 11.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.68/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 13.2 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 24.8 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 42.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 16.7 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

The Chautauqua County Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition will have two walk-in VITA sites open Saturday. Those locations will be at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk, room 124-125, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at the Westfield YWCA, 58 Portage St., Westfield from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

On Feb. 27, there will be one appointment only site from 4 to 7 p.m. at the United Way of Northern Chautauqua at 626 Central Ave., Dunkirk. Call 366-5424 for an appointment.

An IRS certified volunteer will prepare your taxes at no cost to you. All tax returns are filed electronically.

Chautauqua County Humane Society to serve as a Big Read location Saturday

The Chautauqua County Humane Society will serve as a host site for the Big Read event at the Strunk Road Adoption Center on Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Community members are invited to attend at no charge to participate in a book discussion about author Jack London’s “Call of the Wild.” Four seniors from SUNY Fredonia’s English program will facilitate and CCHS will have staff and a canine participant on hand to add to the atmosphere.

Lisa Goodell to appear on Senior Report Saturday

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Lisa Goodell as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Goodell is the executive director for the Chautauqua Blind Association. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m and 8 p.m. for some communities. Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995. Westfield/Ripley Kiwanis Club to hold fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes Research

The Kiwanis Club of Westfield/Ripley will be having a Chicken & Biscuit Dinner Thursday at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church at 15 Union St. in Westfield. The dinner will begin at 5 p.m., and run until 7 p.m. or until dinners are sold out. Each meal includes chicken and gravy over a biscuit, mashed potatoes, peas, dessert, punch and coffee. The Lakeshore Humane Society will host a discussion of this year’s Big Read selection, “The Call of the Wild.” This event, “Calling All Dog Lovers: Exploring The Call of the Wild,” will be held Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Lake-shore Humane Society’s Adoption Center, 431 E. Community members are invited to participate in this discussion of the book, its author Jack London, the history surrounding the work, and/or its social and political context. Friends of Anderson-Lee Library holding book sale

The Friends of Anderson-Lee Library are accepting donations for a mid-winter book sale Feb. 28 and March 1 and 2. All donations may be dropped off at the library in Silver Creek and will be accepted until Feb. 26. The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, 12-5 on Friday, and 10-2 on Saturday. Paperbacks will sell for 50 cents and hard covers will sell for $1.

At this time, the group is not accepting encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias or any kind of textbook. These items do not sell and take up valuable space. Please be sure to only donate books that are clean and are free of rips and tears and musty odors.

Donations may be dropped off during operating hours. The library is open Monday and Tuesday, noon to 8 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds from the annual book sale are used to enhance library collections.

Distance learning course offered at four local schools

Cool Things to Do with Your iPad, iPhone, and iPod, a non-credit distance learning course, will be offered from 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 28.

The course, conducted by Jamestown Community College, will be available at the Silver Creek, Cassadaga, Brocton and Westfield high schools. The cost is $15. To register, call 338-1005.

Training session set on identification and reporting of child abuse

A New York state mandated training session for professionals on identifying and reporting child abuse, maltreatment and neglect will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on March 2 at the LoGuidice Educational Center, D Building, at 9520 Fredonia-Stockton Road in Fredonia.

The training is required for all persons applying for a provisional or permanent certification of license valid for administrative or supervisory service, classroom teaching service, or school service. Therefore, in addition to teachers and school administrators, the mandate affects school physicians, nurses, therapists and others in the fields of healthcare and education.

Participants should bring their license or certificate number with them if possible. A State Education Department certificate of completion will be provided for each course participant.

Fredonia Cable Board announces new board members, upcoming events

On Feb. 7 the Fredonia Cable Access committee(Fredonia Time Warner channels 5 and 17) elected a new Cable Board at its monthly meeting. Marcia Merrins was elected as board president and Sam Kaiser was elected vice president. The committee discussed the upcoming renewal of the Cable Access contract, which expires in April 2013 along with future programming.

In addition to televising SUNY Fredonia’s Pink the Rink game, from WNYF-TV, on Feb. 8, upcoming programming will include coverage of Fredonia High School basketball games and the League of Women Voters’ Meet the Candidates event on Feb. 27. The committee also discussed the progress on the Cable Access Station and the recruitment of new board members for the two open board positions.

The Dunkirk Free Library is pleased to announce its participation in The Big Read. Dunkirk is one of 78 communities across the country to partake in the program. This year’s Big Read title is Jack London’s The Call of the Wild.

Speaker Series and Happy Hour Mixer set for Feb. 21

The Community Cham-ber Development Corp., in conjunction with the Dunkirk Community Cham-ber of Commerce, will hold 2013’s first speaker’s series on Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the SUNY Fredonia Tech-nology Incubator, 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

The series will include a Small Business Assistance Program presentation on the New York State Health Insurance Exchange, and the opportunities and challenges that the Affordable Care Act insurance mandate has created. President/CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce Todd Tranum will give an overview of the areas the County Chamber is affecting the business community and Dunkirk Mayor A.J. Dolce will go over any harborfront development plans and an update on Festivals and activities taking place in the City this year.

Immediately following the presentation all are encouraged to walk across the street to share in food and drink specials at Big Daddy’s Lounge. Guests will have the option of mingling with the happy hour crowd or using the private back room to ask questions of the speakers or network with other businesspeople in attendance. The Master Gardener Program of Chautauqua County announces a free horticultural workshop titled “Building Your Pruning Skills.” The workshop will be held Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. The workshop will include an indoor presentation covering the basics of pruning tools, timing and techniques for ornamental trees and shrubs. The workshop will be taught by certified arborist Andy Post who specializes in preservation and maintenance practices.

Hanover taxes due Tuesday

Property owners are reminded Tuesday is the last day to pay their 2013 county/town taxes penalty-free. Hanover Town Clerk Janine Salzman reminds Hanover taxpayers that taxes can be paid at the Hanover Town Clerk’s Office, 68 Hanover St., during regular business hours. After Tuesday, a 1 percent penalty will be added to the bill. Payments made after Feb. 28 and before April 2 will be assessed at 2 percent.

Finance Committee meets today

The Dunkirk Common Council Finance Committee is scheduled to meet today at 4:30 p.m. in City Hall. After spending its last few meetings working on the reply to the state audit of the city’s use of Community Development Block Grant funds and a reply to concerns expressed in the audit, the committee will get back to city budget issues, according to an agenda provided by committee chairman and First Ward Coun-cilman Michael Michalski.

The Dec. 31 budget drops, reports from the fiscal affairs officer and city treasurer, along with a look at interfund transfers is scheduled. In addition, an update on the recently-started audit of the city’s 2012 spending and revenues is planned.

Train ride available from Gowanda to South Dayton

A train ride by the New York and Lake Erie Railroad Club from Gowanda to South Dayton will be available on Saturday, Feb. 9. The train will leave the depot in Gowanda at 50 Commercial St. at 9:15 a.m.

Train tickets will be $10 for the ride and may be available for purchase from 8:30 to 9 a.m. on Saturday at the depot. Tickets will cost the same for a one-way or round trip. Space is limited on the car. Those riding to South Dayton, a return train will not leave South Dayton until 4:30 p.m. If there is space on the return ride back to Gowanda, those tickets will be sold at the South Dayton train depot during the hours of 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Fred Cros-cut as the guest on Satur-day’s television program. Croscut is a legislator for Chautauqua County. Dunkirk Fire Dept. monthly report

The Dunkirk Fire Department reports going on 153 runs in January. Of that number, 120 were EMS calls with 55 of those resulting in transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. There were 21 still alarms, eight box alarms and four mutual aid calls answered by the department, according to figures from Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom.

A meeting of the Dunkirk Industrial Development Agency that was scheduled for Thursday has been postponed until a future date.

Dunkirk police chief warns residents

Dunkirk Police Chief David Ortolano warned residents during Tuesday’s Common Council meeting that there should be no door-to-door solicitors working the city at the current time. He said there are no soliciting permits on file in the city clerk’s office and the department has received complaints from residents about energy companies dropping off solicitors in neighborhoods.

“They’re asking to come in and look at utility bills and look over things. I want to remind everyone that if anyone comes to the door looking to solicit for the energy companies that people not let them in and call the police desk,” he stated. “We will send a car and find these people and let them know that they are not to be soliciting. There are no permits right now for anyone going door-to-door.”

Placed in plastic for its protection from the elements, the Medallion bearing the I.C.E. logo is not hidden below ground level and no higher than 6 feet above ground level. Land Bank meeting Feb. 13 in Jamestown

The Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development for-mally announced it will hold an official meeting of the Chautauqua County Land Bank Corporation on Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. in the CCIDA Board Room, 200 Harrison Street, Jamestown.

This general meeting of the CCLBC is being conducted to discuss business associated with property acquisition & disposition, transfer of properties and funding from County to CCLBC, insurance requirements, website development, marketing/logo development, and other official business as required (agenda will be provided at the meeting).

Brocton Library

to hold children’s

programming Friday

The Ahira Hall Memorial Library in Brocton will host two children events on Friday. The first event will be a Pre-School Story Hour at 10 a.m. at the library. The story hour will be hosted by Mary Ellen Westin and Susan Raymond.

The second event will be Early Elementary Program for grades pre-K, Kindergarten and first grades with library staff and volunteers. Exhibition sled hockey game Saturday

in Jamestown arena

On Saturday at 5 p.m. the Chautauqua County Sher-iff’s Office and the Jamestown Laker’s Hand-icap Sled Hockey Team will play in their annual fundraiser hockey game at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. All proceeds will go to support the Laker’s Sled Hockey Team.

The Laker’s Handicap Sled Hockey Team was formed in 2003 with both cooperate and community sponsorship.

The cost of ice time, travel expenses and maintenance of the equipment continues to skyrocket, forcing the team to seek the help of the community and from local businesses.

The game starts at 5 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Tickets for the silent auction will be sold from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.; winners will be posted by the conclusion of the game. In addition, from 7-9 p.m. the Porcelain Bus Drivers are playing at Sawbuck’s to help support the fundraiser, tickets are $5 at the door or $4 if purchased during the game.

During the show a 50/50 will be held as well as some raffles. If anyone wants to make a monetary donation to the Laker’s Team or an item for the silent auction, contact Deputy Hover or the coach of the Laker’s Team, Rod Koltsie at 499-7697.

Gowanda Universal pre-k program

registration begins

The Gowanda Central School District is currently registering students for the Universal Pre-K program for the 2013-2014 school year. The Gowanda Pre-K program provides quality, integrated instruction to enhance the development of language, cognitive and social skills.

Relay for Life Team Lucky 777 to hold chicken BBQ

Relay for Life Team Lucky 777 will host a Chiavetta’s Chicken Barbecue on March 3. It will be held at the First Ward Falcon Club on Lake Shore Drive in Dunkirk. Bailey Family benefit March 3

A benefit will be held March 3 at 2 p.m. at the St. Stephen Hotel in Brocton. Proceeds will benefit the Bailey family, who lost their home and possessions in a house fire on Dec. 20. Mayor proclaims “Al Stuhlmiller Day”

Dunkirk Mayor Anthony J. Dolce has proclaimed today as Al Stuhlmiller Day in the city in honor of the former Dunkirk High School coach and athletic director’s stellar career.

Dolce cites Stuhlmiller’s accomplishments as a high school athlete at Gowanda High School, as a baseball player at Syracuse University and as a 1951 signee with the New York Yankees when he played a year at Amsterdam in the former Canadian-America League.

The proclamation states Stuhlmiller coached baseball at Dunkirk from 1955-1983 and coached the Marauders to three Division 1 baseball titles while compiling “the finest record of any high school baseball coach in Chautauqua County history and also one of the finest marks in Section 6 history.”

In addition, Stuhlmiller received many awards and citations during his career; was named one of the top eight coaches in the country by College Baseball Coaches of America and received a special award from the New York State Baseball Coaches Association before being inducted into the Chautauqua County Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.

Today would have been Stuhlmiller’s 84th birthday and to honor him friends and family are gathering to remember and reminisce. Dolce proclaimed today Al Stuhlmiller Day in Dunkirk, “in recognition of his many contributions to the young people of our community and the example he set as an exemplary citizen of our community and for the way he represented our city wherever the fortunes of life carried him.”

Pancake benefit breakfast Sunday

Project reporting session Feb. 13

A project reporting session is scheduled for Feb. 13 at the Cornell Lake Erie Research and Extension Laboratory at 6592 W. Main Road, Portland. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and run until about 2 p.m.

Updates on projects funded by the Lake Erie Regional Grape Program Research and Extension Program, Inc. (the group charged with dispersing the 75 cents per ton voluntary assessment for Concords produced in the Lake Erie Region), New York Wine and Grape Foundation, New York Wine Grape Growers Association and Viticulture Consortium East, will be presented, as well as, short presentations on proposed new projects.

The meeting format is designed to encourage discussion between those who are conducting or proposing projects, the funders, and the grower community by limiting presentations to 5 minutes and eliminating the use of visual aids.

The Chautauqua County Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition will have two walk-in VITA Sites open Saturday at the SUNY Fredonia Technology Incubator, 214 Central Ave., Room 124-125, Dunkirk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County, Dunkirk from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m..

An IRS certified volunteer will prepare your taxes at no cost to you. All tax returns are filed electronically.

If you worked in 2012, but earned less than the income guidelines, you may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit – even if you are not required to file an income tax return.
