Special meeting today at Pine Valley on superintendent

The Pine Valley Board of Education will hold a special meeting today at 7:30 p.m. to appoint a superintendent. The meeting will be held in the board conference room in the elementary school.

Dunkirk Town Board workshop

The Town Board will hold a workshop and special meeting at 6:30 p.m. today at the Town Hall, 4737 Willow Road. The purpose of the meeting is to hold a workshop and conduct any other lawful business to come before the town board.

Brocton BOE will meet to reorganize Wednesday

The Brocton Central School Board of Education will hold it’s reorganizational meeting on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with the regular meeting to immediately follow.

Willowbrook Cemetery meeting to elect trustees

A special meeting of the lot owners at Willowbrook Cemetery will be held in the cemetery chapel, Dunkirk, on Tuesday, July 21 at 10:30 a.m. The purpose of the meeting is to update lot owners on cemetery business and the election of trustees.

City Hall closed Friday

Dunkirk City Hall will be closed Friday in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

DHS Class of 1963 reunion plans

The DHS Class of 1963 is planning an informal get together on Friday, Aug. 7 at Rookies on the Lake, located on Lake Shore Drive and a catered picnic on Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Exempt Fireman’s Club on Central Avenue.

That weekend there is an alumni golf tournament for DHS/CMHS/FHS so the committee decided it would be a good time to celebrate the milestone birthdays of 1963 classmates.

Safe driving class July 13-14

An AARP Safe Driving class is scheduled for Monday, July 13 and Tuesday, July 14, from 12:30 until 3:30 p.m. both days at the Masonic Center 321 E. Main St., Fredonia. Participants must attend both days.

The cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members and checks should be made out to AARP. The course offers possible insurance reduction and/or point reduction

Dayton Historial Society to hold spaghetti dinner

The Dayton Historical Society’s spaghetti dinner will be held July 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out, which ever comes first. The dinner will be held at the Dayton Fire Hall, located on Route 62, and is to benefit the Dayton Historical Society. The cost is an $8 donation, and presale tickets will be available until July 13 by calling: Merrill at 257-3070, Myrna at 532-5287 or Ruth at 532-3758 or 988-5065.

With each presale ticket, the patron will be entered to win one of two donated prizes – an electric Quartz Tower Heater (value $60) or $50 cash. Only presale tickets will be eligible to win these prizes, but tickets for the dinner will be available at the door for the same price. Dinner consists of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and beverage. There will also be several theme baskets. Tickets for chances for the theme baskets are 4 for $1.

The Dayton Historical Society is a non-profit organization that needs help with expenses in order to continue providing historical information for all interested parties.

Silver Creek to hold public hearing July 6

A public hearing to present amendments to local laws 155-1 to 155-10, 60-1 to 60-6, and 60-2B will be held July 6 at the Silver Creek Village Board meeting starting at 6 p.m. in the village hall. The local laws deal with charging for code violations for property maintenance. Proposed amendments can be viewed at the village office prior to the hearing.

FHS Class of 1975 reunion set

The Fredonia High School Class of 1975 will be holding their 40th reunion on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25. The organizing committee for this very special reunion is: JoAnne Brown, Carol Kaminski Gotowka, Nancy Urban Napieralski, Joe Coughlin, Ross Sorci, Alan Alaimo, Tina Malcolm Reilly and Ray and Cindy Coniglio.

The activities on Friday night will be held at Coughlan’s Pub. They begin at 6 p.m. with a Happy Hour featuring local fare appetizers and a cash bar. Joe will have a separate area under a tent in the rear of the bar for our privacy. The cost is $10 per person.

On Saturday night, there will be dinner beginning at 6 p.m. at The Colony Restaurant in Irving. The hosts for the evening will be classmate and owner Jeff LaBarbera along with another classmate and chef, Scott Parker. They have put together a fantastic menu that features various stations for appetizers, pasta, entrees and dessert. The class will have their own cash bar in the banquet area. The cost will be $40 per person.

There will be some keepsakes and giveaways for classmates over the weekend. In addition, deceased classmates will be honored by planting a tree that will have a plaque with all their names on it on the school grounds. All of this is included in the cost.

Golf is tentatively scheduled for Saturday late morning at Shorewood CC. Information about other organized activities for Saturday morning and afternoon will be forthcoming.

YWCA Westfield to host Paint Night

Area residents are invited to explore their artistic side and create a masterpiece on Thursday, July 9. In partnership with the Erie, Pa. based Cocktails and Color Art Studio, the YWCA Westfield will host a Paint Night, beginning at 6 p.m.

This is an artist directed group lesson that allows everyone to personally paint; while enjoying wine and snacks. The $40 fee is all inclusive materials and refreshments are provided.

There is limited seating and reservations are required. The studio is handling the reservations on line, they can be contracted through facebook or by logging onto their site www.cocktailsandcoloreriepa.com and following the public events link.

The Paint Night will be held at the YWCA Westfield, 58 S. Portage St., Westfield. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the YWCA Westfield.

William Neches to appear on Chautauqua People

William Neches, M.D. will be the next person featured on Chautauqua People. The program will air at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each day, beginning Saturday with the last airing on July 3.

Dr. Neches is a native of Brooklyn and enjoyed a career as a pediatric cardiologist. As a young physician, he was involved in the first pediatric heart transplant, and served a full academic career at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh after fellowship training at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Now in retirement, he is a summer resident of Chautauqua Institution and was elected as President of the Chautauqua Property Owners Association in August 2014. During recent years, he has been the leader of several demonstration projects to upgrade the street lighting at Chautauqua.

These efforts were recognized in a new United States Department of Energy publication.

Dr. Neches will be interviewed by Chautauqua People Producer John Viehe.

Access Channel 5 (QAM channel 21.4 without a converter) is available to cable viewers in the Mayville, Chautauqua, North Harmony, Sherman, Westfield and Portland areas.

Fredonia-Pomfret summer rec begins Monday

The Fredonia-Pomfret Recreation Department will begin staffing the six area playgrounds beginning Monday at 9 a.m.

The Russell Joy Park, Lambert Avenue, Gardner Street and Barker Street playgrounds will be staffed from 9 a.m. to noon, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Elm Street and Laona playgrounds will only be staffed from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to the playgrounds, instructional activities will be available in swimming, soccer, basketball, tennis, karate, Spanish, sewing and drama.

Registration will take place today, Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon on the second floor of the village hall.

County Landbank meeting Tuesday

The Chautauqua County Land Bank Corporation will hold its next meeting of the Acquisition & Disposition Committee of the CCLBC on June 30 at 3 p.m. in the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency Offices, 200 Harrison St., Jamestown. This meeting of the CCLBC is being conducted to discuss business associated with the acquisition and potential sale of property by CCLBC and other official business as required. Prayer vigil today

Federal Duck Stamp goes on sale Friday

The Federal Duck Stamp goes on sale Friday. This year’s stamp was designed by Jennifer Miller of Olean. It is now possible to purchase the Federal Duck Stamp for $26 from the office of Perrysburg Town Clerk Tamara A. Utley. The Clerk’s office is located at the Perrysburg Town Hall, 10460 Peck Hill Road, Perrysburg.

Annual DHS Senior Sweep today

Today, nearly 80 Dunkirk High School seniors will take part in the 14th Annual Senior Sweep. The annual event will take place citywide with seven different locations, including downtown, the waterfront, city parks and schools. These graduating seniors will be picking up litter and garbage throughout the city, as well as helping to do some landscaping at the Dunkirk Free Library.

This year, headquarters will be moving from City Hall to Memorial Park, where games and activities will be offered after the “sweeping” of the city is done. Forestville Fire Department calls

Forestville Fire Chief Kyle Barthel reported the department responded to a total of 30 calls in May and 29 calls at the time of June 23. He said this brings the year to date total to 180.

Gas up 2.7 cents

Average retail gasoline prices in New York have risen 2.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.95/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 6,118 gas outlets in New York. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.80/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in New York during the past week, prices Sunday were 96.1 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 10.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 5.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 88.9 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Dunkirk High School commencement exercises will be held in King Concert Hall on the campus of Fredonia State University on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

A ticket will be required for admission.

Students will participate in the traditional courtyard procession and bell-ringing ceremony that will begin at Dunkirk High at 9:15 a.m.

Located on the corner of Ruggles Street and Cliffstar Court at the Dunkirk Senior Center you’ll also find local farmers selling fresh fruit and vegetables, herbs, poultry, breads, pastries, and many more locally produced foods, as well as vegetable and flowering plants.

United Way Golf Classic on June 29

The United Way of Northern Chautauqua County will hold its second annual Golf Classic on June 29 at the Tri-County Country Club, 540 Route 39, Forestville. Check-in starts at 9:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Sponsorships are available. The registration fee per golfer includes tee gift, cart, golf, lunch and dinner for $100 per golfer. Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Hayley Restivo as the guest on Saturday. Restivo is a recording artist. The program will be hosted by Doc Hamels. Narcan training session will be held Tuesday

A Narcan training session will be held Tuesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at Rural Ministry of Chautauqua County, 127 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

This free opioid overdose training is open to the public. Registration is required. Space is limited. Call 753-4507.

OD prevention rescue kits will be provided for registrants. Heroin and pain medication dependency has no boundaries.

Local Early Intervention Coordinating Council to meet Wednesday

The next meeting of the Local Early Intervention Coordinating Council has been scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Hall R. Clothier Building, 4th Floor Conference Room, 7 N. Erie St. in Mayville.

The LEICC is made up of professionals and parents involved in the Early Intervention Program in Chautauqua County, a statewide program to help families meet the needs of infants and toddlers up to the age of three with developmental disabilities.

Services provided by the program may include occupational therapy, physical therapy, special instruction, speech therapy and vision services.

Bridge closed today

Chautauqua County Bridge 930 on County Road 380 in the town of Stockton, between County Route 71 and Harvey Road, will be closed to all traffic effective today.

The closure is due to the replacement of the bridge.

The Friends of Fredonia is seeking volunteers to staff the Welcome Center located in Barker Common. The center is open until Sept. 12 on Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m., Fridays from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nicaraguan Aid Project

The Dunkirk-Fredonia Center for Peace & Justice is continuing its program for humanitarian donations for poverty-stricken residents of the Central American nation of Nicaragua.

CPJ is doing this in conjunction with Ann Marie Zon, a Catholic social worker from East Amherst who has spent more than three decades assisting Nicar-aguans.

The following items will be collected: summer clothing, footwear, household items (dishes, pots and pans, small appliances, no coffee makers,) linens, sewing items, personal care items, school supplies, medical supplies (anything over the counter,) religions articles (no prayer books,) shelf stable foods, toys and coloring books (no war toys.) No bicycles.

Monetary gifts are also very much in order. Make checks payable to “Nicaraguan Mission.” Leave the checks when you bring items (or send them) to Rev. Rodney Houck, 146 Central Ave., Fredonia, N.Y. 14063.

The CPJ 2015 collection begins July 1 and continues through July 26.

Cassadaga Valley Class of 1985 reunion July 11

The Cassadaga Valley Class of 1985 will hold its 30-year reunion on July 11 at 5 p.m. at Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood.

Silver Creek CSEA hearing rescheduled for July 6

The CSEA step 3 grievance hearing has been rescheduled for July 6 at 6 p.m. before the regular workshop and meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board. The meeting will be held in the village hall. Also to be held that night will be a public hearing on amending local laws so the village can charge for lawn mowing rendered by the village due to code violations.

Tour of Chautauqua Bike Ride

The 32st annual Tour of Chautauqua Bike Ride will be held on Aug. 8 originating and finishing in front of the Eason Hall, 23 Elm St. Westfield. The mass start begins at 9 a.m. Water and refreshment stops and sag wagon services are provided. Helmets are required. Recreational tours of courses of 25, 40, 62, 75 and 100 miles are offered, with a light meal at the finish provided. Camp Gross spots still available

The city of Dunkirk Youth Bureau has announced that spots are still available for camp, and anyone wishing to send their child to more than two weeks can sign up beginning this Monday. Fees remain at $40 for city residents and $50 for non-city residents.

Gowanda looking

for WWII veterans

to add to Honor Roll

The Gowanda Honor Roll listing the names of World War II veterans from the Gowanda area has been moved to the Gowanda Area Historical Society museum.

Erected at the Gowanda Free Library in 1945, it was damaged in the 2009 flood. The case has been repaired and the names are being reprinted. All names on the original honor roll will be included, along with those discovered by subsequent research.

All names must be submitted by July 1. An unveiling and rededication ceremony is planned for later this year.

DHS Class of 1963 Reunion Aug. 7-8

Plans have been made to celebrate the milestone birthdays of the classmates of DHS ’63. Starting on Aug. 7, there will be an informal get-together at 7 p.m. at Rookies on the Lake. Then on Aug. 8, a catered picnic will be held at the Exempt Firemen’s Club on Central Avenue in Dunkirk at 4 p.m. The celebration is scheduled around the DHS/FHS/CMHS golf tournament being held that weekend in the hopes of seeing many past alumni and friends. The United Way of Northern Chautauqua County will hold its second annual Golf Classic on June 29 at the Tri-County Country Club, 540 Route 39, Forestville.

There will also be a presentation of the Grand Lodge Dedicated Service Award to Daniel Smith, in appreciation for his years of dedication and service to the Lodge.

The picnic will consist of hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as side dishes and desserts that members are asked to bring.

Gowanda looking

for WWII veterans

for Honor Roll

The Gowanda Honor Roll listing the names of World War II veterans from the Gowanda area has been moved to the Gowanda Area Historical Society museum.

Erected at the Gowanda Free Library in 1945, it was damaged in the 2009 flood. The case has been repaired and the names are being reprinted. All names on the original honor roll will be included, along with those discovered by subsequent research.

All names must be submitted by July 1. An unveiling and rededication ceremony is planned for later this year.

Gas price rises again

Average retail gasoline prices have risen 3.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.80/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 99.8 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 6.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 9.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 90.5 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

MAPS Bird Banding classes scheduled

A series of MAPS Bird Banding sessions is planned this summer at the Audubon Nature Center, 1600 Riverside Road, Jamestown. Guests can tag along with ornithologists (bird scientists) to learn how they capture, band and release birds for scientific research.

The Roger Tory Peterson Institute will host a Tropical Talk Thursday at 7 p.m. at 311 Curtis St., Jamestown. The topic is “The Migratory Connection: RTPI’s Tropi-cal Conservation and Edu-cation Programs” by RTPI president Twan Leenders. The program highlights the Central American connection to western N.Y.

This is a free event and open to the public. Guests will be amazed by tropical birds that share the wintering grounds of local warblers and hummingbirds, and meet some of the rarest frogs on the planet.

Attendees can also explore the exotic wildlife in the jungles of Costa Rica and Panama and learn about the work that RTPI and associates are doing to combat the loss of biodiversity.

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.

The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the healthcare, construction, and the security industries, as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse and a security and protective services program.

The Academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career.

Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

Safety Saturday set for fairgrounds

Today, area residents can join the Putnam-Record Agency from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds for the third annual Safety Saturday. The day will be filled with a wide array of safety demonstrations and fun activities for the entire family.

Some involved include: Dunkirk Fire Department, Spoke Folk, Dunkirk Police Department, New York State Police, along with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office. For all train enthusiasts, the Alco-Brooks Locomotive will be open for you to walk through and learn about Dunkirk’s great history in the rail system and production of the locomotive.

New this year will be a Scavenger Hunt throughout the event. Come to each table, answer the question correctly and receive a free prize.

In addition to all of the demonstrations and activities, there will also be hot dogs, juice, popcorn, balloons and coloring books available.

Silver Creek Children’s Fair

The 13th annual Silver Creek Children’s Fair will be held today in the village square and park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Events include pony rides, a petting zoo, bounce houses, carnival games, shopping, food, a dunk tank, T-shirt coloring and much more. The children’s fair is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Silver Creek. In addition, the village will hold youth recreation signups.

MAPS Bird Banding

A series of MAPS Bird Banding sessions is planned this summer at the Audubon Nature Center, 1600 Riverside Road, Jamestown. Guests can tag along with ornithologists (bird scientists) to learn how they capture, band and release birds for scientific research. Each session begins at dawn and lasts for six hours, so times vary, but are approximately from 6 a.m. to noon. The sessions begin today and continue on Friday, June 12; Saturday, June 27; Friday, July 3; Saturday, July 11; and Saturday, Aug. 8. The event is free, however, donations are appreciated.

Temple Street to be closed for road reconstruction

Temple Street in the village of Fredonia will be closed to all traffic from Terrace Street to Brigham Road for road construction (milling and paving) starting Monday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, until all work is completed. Residents are asked to please find alternative routes for travel. The village apologizes for any inconvenience.

All area veterans are urged to attend a Walk Through for United States Air Force SSgt. Michael A. Klose at noon on Saturday at the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, Central Avenue, Fredonia. This organized Walk Through will allow all veterans to show their respect for a fellow Comrade in Arms who lost his life while serving our country to protect our freedom.

Please arrive at the funeral home by 11:45 a.m. We will form in the driveway of the funeral home and begin our walk through at noon and enter the funeral home single file, salute our comrade, and file out. All members of veterans’ organizations are urged to wear their covers (hats).

The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation will hold its 2015 Annual Meeting on Monday, June 15, at 4 p.m. The meeting will take place at the JCC Training & Conference Facility on Bennett Road in Dunkirk.

The highlight of the meeting will be the presentation of the “George B. Weaver Jr. Footprints Award” to Wayne, Elaine and Laurel Hotelling of Silver Creek. This award honors those who have left footprints for others in the community to follow in the areas of philanthropy and service.

for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

at Rite Aid Pharmacy

On Friday, Rite Aid Pharmacy in Fredonia will host a fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Last year, the store raised almost $2,000 for CMNH in May.

This year, Rite Aid reached out to local businesses, restaurants and gyms to help with donations for this year’s fundraiser.

This Friday, hot dogs, drinks, bake sale treats and raffle tickets will be available for purchase from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. All proceeds benefit the local CMNH Women and Child-ren’s Hospital of Buffalo.

Summer book sale benefit for Dunkirk Free Library Saturday

The Friends of the Dunkirk Free Library will hold its annual fundraiser, a summer book sale, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the front lawn and inside the library, with great deals on gently used books and media items.

Hardcovers are $1; paperbacks are $.50. Friends of the Dunkirk Free Library tote bags will be $10 empty and $15 filled with books. Children and families are welcome. There will be face-painting and balloon animals, raffles, food and beverages for sale and attended parking for bikes and strol-lers. All proceeds go toward supporting and promoting the Dunkirk Free Library.

DFD May run report

The Dunkirk Fire Depart-ment reports going on 180 runs in May, with 138 of those EMS runs which resulted in 47 transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital.

There were 17 still alarms, 20 box alarms and five mutual aid calls the DFD answered, according to Chief Mike Edwards.

Through the first five months of 2015, the department has gone on a total of 874 runs, with 686 of those EMS runs, resulting in 259 transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. There has been 91 still alarms, 71 box alarms and 26 mutual aid calls answered.

Silver Creek to meet once a month

The Silver Creek Village Board has changed its meeting schedule to one time per month for July, August and September.

These meetings will be held on July 6, Aug. 3 and Sept. 8.

Note that the September meeting is on a Tuesday in observance of Labor Day.

The regular meeting time will also be an hour earlier at 6 p.m. for these three months.

All meetings are open to the public and are held at the village hall, 172 Central Ave., Silver Creek.

Silver Creek hearing reset for June 15

The Silver Creek CSEA step 3 grievance hearing has been rescheduled for June 15 at 6 p.m. in the village hall. The regular village board workshop and meeting will immediately follow.

Summer Book Sale Saturday in Dunkirk

The Friends of the Dunkirk will hold its annual fundraiser, the Summer Book Sale, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the front lawn and inside the library, with great deals on gently used books and media items. Hardcovers are $1; paperbacks are $.50.

Friends of the Dunkirk Free Library tote bags will be $10 empty and $15 filled with books.

Children and families are welcome; there will be face-painting and balloon animals, as well as raffles, food and beverages for sale, and attended parking for bikes and strollers. All proceeds go toward supporting and promoting the Dunkirk Free Library.

Brocton Central School Board meets Monday

The Brocton Central School Board of Education will conduct a special board meeting Monday at 6 p.m. to meet with the BOCES District Superintendent.

Silver Creek Fire Department May calls

The Silver Creek Fire Department responded to a total of 48 calls in May. These included 12 emergency calls, five fires and one motor vehicle accident in the village and 24 emergency calls, three fires and three motor vehicle accidents in the town of Hanover.

Chief James Tytka Jr. reported seven of these calls occurred on Memorial Day.

He also noted that the fire whistle will be quiet for some time because it needs to be repaired. He said it will cost about $2,500 and take some time for the necessary parts to arrive.

Tytka also pointed out that the statewide burn ban expired on June 21, however this does not mean all burning is allowed. He said if residents are not sure if a fire is legal go to the Department of Conserva-tion website at www.dec.ny.gov/regs/4261.html or call the fire department at 934-3036 or the sheriff’s office at 753-4900.

First Friday fun to begin this week in Westfield

June 5 is Westfield’s first “First Friday” of the season, sponsored by the Westfield Barcelona Community Chamber of Commerce.

Gas rises 2 cents

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 2.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.77/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 0.4 cents per gallon to $2.75/g.

Including the change in gas prices during the past week, prices Sunday were 102.8 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 8.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 14.8 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 92.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.
