Ripley’s Walk Against Breast Cancer July 9
Billie Jo Reid and several volunteers have created a walk to help support people with breast cancer. The walk will be July 9 at 1 Park Ave. in Ripley
All donations will be split between The Circle of Love of Dunkirk, Partners for Prevention of Jamestown and the Regional Cancer Center of Erie, Pa.
A silent auction will be held after the walk, leading right into the Ripley Bicentennial. Sign-in for the walk begins at 7 a.m. The walk begins at 9 a.m.

Raising Monarchs
program July 13
A Raising Monarchs program has been scheduled for July 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Fredonia Grange 1, 58 W. Main St.
This is a free program, open to the public, the result of a Community Benefit Grant by the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation to the Audubon Nature Center.
DHS?pool Red Cross lifeguard course June 13
The Dunkirk High School Pool is proud to offer a Red Cross new lifeguard certification course.
The course will take place June 13 to June 17 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Participants must be present for all days to receive their certification. Participants must be at least 15 years old, will need to swim 500 yards non-stop, tread water for 2 minutes without arms, and complete a block sprint in 1:40 to be eligible to continue with the course. They must be ready to swim all days.
Classroom time is required. The cost is $135 per participant – cash only.
The course is capped at 12 participants.

The Chautauqua County Music Teachers Association will hold its All-County Spring Music Festival on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Chautauqua Amphitheater.

Patrick Swanson to appear on Chautauqua Sunrise Saturday
Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Patrick Swanson as the guest on Saturday. Swanson is acting District Attorney for Chautauqua County.
Host Doc Hamels will conduct the program. The live program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. The guest is subject to change.

Collins Historical Car Show & picnic July 23
The annual Collins Historical Car Show and picnic will be held July 23 from noon to 4 p.m. at School Street and Collins Center Zoar Road (behind old school building), Collins Center. The event will be held rain or shine. There is no entry fee. There will be free public admission and free parking.
Trophies will be awarded for first through fourth place and the over-all best liked car. Golden oldies will be played throughout the event and trivia will be played throughout the event with the chance to win prizes. The picnic will offer hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, chips, pop and water. There will also be a bake sale.

Gowanda to reimburse garbage stickers
Residents of Gowanda who have unused garbage stickers can submit them for reimbursement until July 1. Forms are available at the village clerk’s office, which must be filled out and submitted with the returned stickers. Checks will be mailed out all at once after the July village board meeting. A dropbox has been installed outside village hall for residents’ convenience.
Forestville Community Yard Sale June 11
The Forestville Com-munity Yard Sale will be held on June 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Households that wish to participate may sign up at Cave’s Market or Evans Bank. The cost is $5 per household. A list of all participants will be available at Cave’s Market on the day of the sales.
The Forestville Fire Department will host a chicken barbecue on that day at noon.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff Employees Benevolent Association is taking applications for its 2016 scholarship award in the amount of $500.
This scholarship is available to any high school senior who is planning on entering the criminal justice or police science field and is limited to law enforcement only.
Applicants must be residents of Cattaraugus County to qualify.
Any interested student should contact the guidance office in his or her school for an application and further information.
The applications should be postmarked no later than Friday.

Hazardous waste drop-off day to be held in Dunkirk
Chautauqua County will sponsor a household hazardous waste drop-off day for items like paint, car fluids, cleaning agents and pesticides.
These chemicals, among others, can be dropped off for free at the department of public works, 19 Lucas Ave., on June 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Those dropping off hazardous household waste must fill out a registration form that is available at www.dunkirktoday.com.

Forestville Memorial Day parade and service
A Memorial Day parade and service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in downtown Forestville. Forestville American Legion Post 953, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Forestville High School Marching Band, the Forestville Fire Department and miscellaneous vehicles will participate.
The parade will conclude and the service will start at the American Legion Post, 6 Cedar St. The service honors members of the military and contains a traditional 21 gun salute. Doug Allen, the singer who performs the United States and Canadian National Anthems at Sabres hockey games, will perform patriotic songs.
The Forestville Food Pantry will provide food and refreshments immediately following the service.

The Sheridan Historical Society will be open at the former town hall at the corner of Route 20 and Center Road on Memorial Day on Monday from 9 a.m. until noon.
The parade follows at noon, from the Sheridan municipal parking lot down route 20 to the four corners, then south on Center Road to the Sheridan Center cemetery where there will be a short service.
The Sheridan Fire Department will hold a chicken barbecue from 1 p.m. until sold out at the fire hall, 2800 Route 20, Sheridan. The cost is $9 per dinner. Raffle tickets are also available.

Greater Buffalo Firefighter Pipe and Drums to march in city
Dunkirk Professional Firefighters Local 616 announces that the Greater Buffalo Firefighter Pipe and Drums will march with the Dunkirk Firefighter Honor Guard in this year’s Memorial Day parade.
Formed in 2012 the group consists of firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS providers and friends of first responders.
After the parade, the pipe and drum group will hold a concert at the Dunkirk Exempt Fireman’s Club at 203 Central Ave.
Jack Hamels to appear on Chautauqua Sunrise
Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Jack Hamels as the guest Saturday. Hamels, father of host Doc Hamels, will discuss the first All American Soap Box Derby in 1934. This show marks the 100th Chautauqua Sunrise.

Sky lanterns to benefit cemetery
The Evergreen Cemetery Association of Sinclairville is selling personalized memorial sky lanterns that will be lighted and released following the Memorial Day service in the cemetery. The lanterns are $5 each. Proceeds will benefit the cemetery. Lanterns will be on sale at Sinclairville Superette Saturday and prior to the parade.
Lakeshore Humane Society Pet Adoption Day/Open House
The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold a Pet Adoption Day/Open House at its Adoption Center on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 431 E. Chestnut Street, Dunkirk.
Come to see the facility, and meet some of the dogs and cats who need caring homes.
LHS encourages the public to consider the cats in the “Lonely Hearts Club for Cats.” These are cats who have been at the Center for one to three years, largely because they are shy and need to come out of their shell. With an experienced cat person, willing to give the love, time, and patience needed, these cats can be the most loving pets when given a chance. The adoption fee for these cats is $30 – half the usual fee for cat adoptions.

Gowanda recycling center to open Mondays
The Gowanda recycling center on Aldrich Street will be open on Mondays from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. during the summer months, except for holidays, beginning June 1.
It is open the same hours on Wednesdays, and on Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m. Residents can bring their plastics and metals, though no glass or paper receptacles are available. Paper may be brought to the green and yellow bins around the village. Glass must be brought to the transfer station. Please ensure that all containers are empty and clean, and that no garbage is mixed in with recyclables.

Gas prices remain
near 2016 high
The national price for a gallon of unleaded gas went up 6 cents from last week to $2.28 per gallon. One year ago, the national average was $2.74. Today, the New York State average is $2.43, up a nickel from last week.

- Rochester – $2.38 (up three cents)

‘Rediscover Gowanda’ carnival this weekend
All are invited to the Rediscover Gowanda carnival Memorial Day weekend. Festivities kick off Thursday with sidewalk sales, food vendors, rides and more. Features will set up in the large municipal lot behind Gabel Bros. and the downtown area. The weekend will have a military theme.
The Hollywood Theater will show “Navajo Code Talkers” Friday at 7 p.m. and “Last Letters Home” Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by “Inside the Green Berets” at 3 p.m. The NY and Lake Erie Railroad and Love, INC. will offer military-themed train rides to South Dayton and back, with Civil War re-enactors on board. Summer reminders
in Gowanda
Gowanda officials remind residents not to blow or sweep their grass cuttings into the street. Doing so clogs storm drains and can cause flooding. Dispose of cuttings properly, or start a compost pile at home.
Also, burning garbage or yard waste, like leaves or grass, is illegal. Residents are allowed to have small, contained campfires in their yards, but are reminded to be safe and have a fire extinguisher nearby.

Under the proposals, water rates for consumption between 1,000 and 100,000 gallons would go from $3.52 to $3.65 per 1,000 gallons of water; and sewer rates would rise from $5.07 to $5.17 per 1,000 gallons.

Water hydrants in the town of Collins will be flushed this week. Hydrants in the Collins portion of District 1 will be flushed today to Wednesday, and Collins Center (District 3) hydrants will be flushed Thursday and Friday. Water customers should be aware of this and may want to avoid doing laundry those days to avoid discoloration.

A board meeting of the County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency Board of Directors will be held at CCIDA, 200 Harrison St., Jamestown, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Board room.
Westfield First Friday events are coming
What is First Friday? On the first Friday of each month June to September, businesses on Main Street in Westfield are encouraged to remain open beyond normal business hours, while vendors and a variety of activities are made available along the store fronts providing an atmosphere promoting the local flavor, including: small and independent businesses, live music, artisans, food, raffles, wine tasting and fun for all ages. These events are sponsored by the Westfield Barcelona Community Chamber of Commerce to help promote the economic growth of the Community.

Gowanda garbage service providers list
As the village of Gowan-da will no longer provide garbage service to residents, officials have compiled a list of service providers whom residents may hire.
These businesses are permitted in the village and through Cattaraugus County. By law, they each must provide curbside recycling services in addition to trash hauling. The recycling center on Aldrich Street will remain open, as well.
Cemetery group to sell memorial sky lanterns
The Evergreen Cemetery Association in Sinclairville is selling personalized memorial sky lanterns. The lanterns will be lighted and released following the Memorial Day service. The lanterns are $5 each. Proceeds will benefit the cemetery. They will be on sale May 28 at Sinclairville Superette and just prior to the parade.

Gas prices stabilize
Gas prices continue to fluctuate during the spring season. The national price for a gallon of unleaded gas went up 1 cent from last week to $2.22 per gallon.
Today, the New York state average is $2.38, no change from last week.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff Employees Benevolent Association Scholarship available
The Cattaraugus County Sheriff Employees Benevolent Association is taking applications for its 2016 scholarship award in the amount of $500.
This scholarship is available to any high school senior who is planning on entering the criminal justice or police science field and is limited to law enforcement only.
Applicants must be residents of Cattaraugus County to qualify.
Any interested student should contact the guidance office in his or her school for an application and further information. The applications should be postmarked no later than June 3.
Public hearings set for sewer, water rate hikes in Fredonia
The Fredonia Village Board has scheduled public hearings for Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the trustees room at village hall for hikes in the water and sewer rates. Under the proposals, water rates for consumption between 1,000 and 100,000 gallons would go from $3.52 to $3.65 per 1,000 gallons of water; and sewer rates would rise from $5.07 to $5.17 per 1,000 gallons.
AARP Smart Driver Class next week
The Ahira Hall Memorial Library, 37 W. Main St. in Brocton, has scheduled an AARP Smart Driver Class for Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon. Call 792-9418 to register.
Class fees are $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members, payable by check only. Participants need to bring a pen and driver’s license to class and arrive 15 minutes early the first day to allow for registration.

Gowanda to reimburse garbage stickers
Residents of Gowanda who have unused garbage stickers can submit them for reimbursement until July 1. Forms are available at the village clerk’s office, which must be filled out and submitted with the returned stickers. Checks will be mailed out all at once after the July village board meeting. A dropbox has been installed outside village hall for residents’ convenience.

Fredonia Fire Department releases March runs
The Fredonia Fire Department has released its run report for March.
Crews responded to a total of 150 calls. That amount breaks down into 115 rescue and emergency medical service cases, 12 good intent calls, 10 false alarms, five fires, four service calls and four hazardous conditions without any fire.
A total of 92 calls originated within the village of Fredonia, while 30 came from the town of Pomfret outside village limits, 16 came from the State University of New York at Fredonia campus and two were on the New York State Thruway. Ten calls were for mutual aid.
Gun raffle Saturday
The Gowanda Ambu-lance Service is sponsoring a gun raffle on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Gowanda Ambulance Legion Post 409, 100 Legion Drive, Gowanda. A donation ticket of $10 includes 10 main prize drawings, food beer, pop coffee, sportsman silent auction, sportsman quilt raffle and more.

The Juneteenth 2016 Celebration Committee is sponsoring the Annual Taste of the South on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, 16 W. Fourth St., Dunkirk. The theme for the event is “Southern Down Home Bar-B-Que.” The cost is $10 per person.
The Annual Taste of the South is an all-you-can-eat, Southern-style African-American down home buffet featuring barbecue ribs, shredded pork, barbecue chicken, green beans, black-eyed peas, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, sweet potato pie, banana pudding, and many other dishes.

Summer reminders
in Gowanda
Gowanda officials remind residents not to blow or sweep their grass cuttings into the street. Doing so clogs storm drains and can cause flooding. Dispose of cuttings properly, or start a compost pile at home.
Also, burning garbage or yard waste, like leaves or grass, is illegal. Residents are allowed to have small, contained campfires in their yards, but are reminded to be safe and have a fire extinguisher nearby.
Never leave children unattended near a fire, or leave a fire burning without supervision.

Free rabies vaccination clinic Saturday
The Chautauqua County Dept. of Health and Human Services, Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue and the town of Westfield are sponsoring a free rabies vaccination clinic on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the town of Westfield Highway Building at 118 Chestnut St. in Westfield.
The clinic is open to anyone. Vaccinations will be provided free of charge to all dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets three months of age and older.
All pets need to be on a leash or in a cage. People must know the name of the township in which they reside and should bring any previous rabies vaccination records for each animal that will be receiving a shot to ensure proper and effective vaccinations.

Gas price rises again
Average retail gasoline prices in New York have risen 2.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.37/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 6,118 gas outlets in New York. This compares with the national average that has fallen 0.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.21/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Including the change in gas prices in New York during the past week, prices Sunday were 45.4 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 20.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago.

17th annual Crouse
5K Challenge issued
The 17th annual Crouse 5K Challenge is Friday at 6 p.m., starting at the American Legion Post 409 in Gowanda, where the post-race after party and awards ceremony will be held. The event will include a “Tot Sprint” at 5:30 p.m. and a half-mile “fun run” at 7 p.m. for ages 7 and under.
Registration is $20 the day of the race. The Gowanda Central School student rate is $10. The first 125 people to register will receive a race T-shirt. Minors need parental signature to participate. Proceeds benefit the Dennis Crouse Sr. Scholarship Fund and the Blue By U Youth Track Club. Each year, two seniors at Gowanda Central School receive the scholarship.

Frank Acquavia Scholarship application deadline nears
Dunkirk Memorial American Legion Post 62 has announced the establishment of the Frank Acquavia Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship is made possible by a generous donation from the former Frank Acquavia Post 1344 and will award $1,500 to one deserving individual. The scholarship is open to all veterans or their immediate family in the Dunkirk/Fredonia area who is enrolled in or attending a New York state-accredited college, university, trade or vocational school. Collection will begin at 7 a.m. and continue until every village street has been collected once. Bags and brush are collected separately by different crews. All items for collection must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. Monday morning. In no case will there be repeat collection of areas completed.
All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine. Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than 4 feet in length with bundles being no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight. There is no collection of loose material.
Village residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St., at any time. The drop-off area will be available until further notice.

CCCSEBA Scholarship available
The Cattaraugus County Sheriff Employees Benevolent Association is taking applications for its 2016 scholarship award in the amount of $500. This scholarship is available to any high school senior who is planning on entering the criminal justice or police science field and is limited to law enforcement only. Applicants must be residents of Cattaraugus County to qualify.
Any interested student should contact the guidance office in his or her school for an application and further information. The applications should be postmarked no later than June 3.

Rabies clinic Saturday in Little Valley
A free rabies clinic will be offered at the Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works garage in Little Valley (8810 Route 242) Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. County residents should bring their pets in carriers or on secure leashes. If owners are not sure if or when their pets last received rabies vaccinations, they will be given vaccinations good for one year. All pet owners who get vaccinations for their pets will be given certificates that can be shown to veterinarians or for licensing purposes.
Pet Pantry’s Mother’s Day Craft and Gift Show Saturday, Sunday
The Pet Pantry is hosting an indoor Mother’s Day Craft and Gift Show at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, 1089 Central Ave., Dunkirk on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $1 for adults. Kids 12 and under are admitted for free. There is free parking. Patrons can shop for wine, chocolates, flowers, baked goods, jewelry and 60 other handmade crafts. Refreshments are available. The Pet Pantry is a not for profit group that serves all of Chautauqua County. It provides free pet food for qualifying low-income families and helps them get their pets spayed and neutered.

There will be a black walnut tree-planting ceremony at the corner of Ward Ave-nue and Old Main Exten-sion in the village of Silver Creek Saturday at 11 a.m.
The tree will be planted near the existing monument in nearly the same location as the previous historic tree, which burned in a European museum fire years ago.
The public is invited to attend.
Allegany Region Commission will meet Tuesday morning

Portland road closing
Burr Road in the town of Portland will be closed Monday and Tuesday for a culvert replacement.
Forestville water system flushing to begin
Water service customers of the village of Forestville should be aware that the village of Forestville Depart-ment of Public Works will flush the water system as part of routine maintenance on the system.
The flushing will be conducted from Monday through Thursday starting at 8 p.m. until midnight each night.
During the time of flushing, using the water may result in cloudy water and sediment in the residents’ systems. It will affect all water customers throughout the flushing sequence.
Chautauqua Lecture Series airs on Access Channel 5
Access Channel 5 is airing the 2015 Chautauqua Institution lecture series.
The following lecture will start on Saturday, with the last airing on May 13 at 12:45 and 6:45 p.m.: Ulrike Guerot, “The Future of European Foreign Policy.”

Engraved bricks for Brad Anderson statue walkway
The Brad Anderson Rec-ognition Committee is offering engraved bricks through a fundraising campaign on PolarEngraving.com.
The bricks will cover the walkway around the statue. This will give people, businesses, and groups an opportunity to have their name, group name, pet’s name, or a memorial to someone engraved on a brick displayed on the grounds surrounding the statue.

Book sale at the Ahira Hall Memorial Library
The Ahira Hall Memorial Library, 37 W. Main St., Brocton, is holding its annual spring book sale until May 14 during regular open hours, which are Monday and Wednesday, 1 to 8 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Chautauqua County Certified Food Handler classes this month
Chautauqua County has scheduled two Certified Food Handler classes for May.
The first one will be held Saturday with registration from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and the class from 9 a.m. to noon. The location is Midway State Park, Sunset Room (Lakeside downstairs from the white, old roller rink), 4859 Route 430, (Maple Springs) Bemus Point.
The second will be held May 16 with registration from 12:30 to 1 p.m. and the class from 1 to 4 p.m. The location is JCC South, Arts and Sciences (ARSC) Building, Room 110, Jamestown.

The cost is $40 for-profit first person, $30 any additional registrants; $25 non-profit, $15 any additional registrants.
Yard sale benefit
set for Saturday
A yard sale to benefit those with multiple sclerosis is taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Hometown Insurance, 200 Lake Shore Drive West, Dunkirk.
Donations for the sale can be dropped off or call 366-0001 for pick-ups.
Hot dogs and drinks will be available for lunch.
Dunkirk Lighthouse open for tours
The Dunkirk Lighthouse is now open for daily tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The hours for the tours will be extended for July and August from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tours are $10 per adult and $8 for seniors, students and veterans. It is $3 for children ages 4 to 10 and there is a family fee of $25.

Chautauqua Sunrise will feature NYS Senator Cathy Young as the guest on Saturday. Young will discuss what’s happening in Albany and in her district.
Host Doc Hamels will conduct the program. The live program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.
The guest is subject to change.

Rabies clinic Saturday in Little Valley
A free rabies clinic will be offered at the Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works garage in Little Valley (8810 Route 242) on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
County residents should bring their pets in carriers or on secure leashes. If owners are not sure if or when their pets last received rabies vaccinations, they will be given vaccinations good for one year.
All pet owners who get vaccinations for their pets will be given certificates that can be shown to veterinarians or for licensing purposes.
Alexander Findley Library spring craft bazaar on Saturday
The Alexander Findley Library has planned its annual spring craft bazaar for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Findley Lake Fire Hall on Main Street.
Several crafters will be selling their handmade crafts and baked goods for holiday shopping.
There will be a silent auction with prizes donated by the participating crafters, a 50/50 raffle, free door prize drawings and the kitchen will offer a homemade menu throughout the day. There is free admission to the bazaar.

Pet Pantry’s Mother’s Day Craft and Gift Show Saturday, Sunday
The Pet Pantry is hosting an indoor Mother’s Day Craft and Gift Show at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, 1089 Central Ave., Dunkirk on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is $1 for adults. Kids 12 and under are admitted for free. There is free parking.
Patrons can shop for wine, chocolates, flowers, baked goods, jewelry and 60 other handmade crafts including wood crafts to concrete art. Refreshments are available.
The Pet Pantry is a not-for-profit group that serves all of Chautauqua County. It provides free pet food for qualifying low-income families and helps them get their pets spayed and neutered.
Westfield Little League Opening Day
Westfield Little League will be having Opening Day on Saturday.
There will be a parade that will take place at 9 a.m. on Main Street in Westfield, followed by the Opening Day Ceremony and a day full of games at the Little League Field.

Ripley Board of Ed meeting Thursday
The regular meeting of the Ripley Central School Board of Education will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the elementary library (Room 129).
A public hearing to present the school budget as adopted by the board for the fiscal year July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017 will take place immediately following the meeting.
Pain at the pump due to increased demand
Gas prices continue to fluctuate during the spring season. The national price for a gallon of unleaded gas went up 8 cents from last week to $2.22 per gallon. One year ago, the national average was $2.61.
Today, the New York state average is $2.36, up 6 cents from last week.
AAA Western and Central New York reports the following averages:
Buffalo – $2.34 (up 8 cents)
Rochester – $2.32 (up 7 cents)
Syracuse – $2.31 (up 8 cents)

St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church spaghetti and meatball dinner Wednesday
St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church will host a spaghetti and meatball dinner on Wednesday starting at 4 p.m. at 145 E. Main St. in Fredonia. Tickets will be available at the door for $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Take-outs also will be available for the same price. There will also be a cash giveaway and theme baskets.
Tech for Nonprofits Workshop registration deadline today
Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation and the Chautauqua-Cattarau-gus Library System have teamed up to offer local nonprofits a free two-day workshop titled “Tech for Nonprofits.” This workshop runs Wednesday and June 1 at the JCC North County Training Center in Dunkirk from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff Employees Benevolent Association Scholarship available
The Cattaraugus County Sheriff Employees Benevolent Association is taking applications for its 2016 scholarship award in the amount of $500. This scholarship is available to any high school senior who is planning on entering the criminal justice or police science field and is limited to law enforcement only. Applicants must be residents of Cattaraugus County to qualify.
Any interested student should contact the guidance office in his or her school for an application and further information. The applications should be postmarked no later than June 3.

The Portland Town Board would appreciate residents’ assistance in making this community one in which all can be proud to live and work.
The town of Portland NYS Code Enforcement-/Zoning Officer will review properties within the town that have unlicensed and/or inoperable vehicles, rubbish, garbage, overgrown weeds/grass or unsafe structures on the properties. Help is needed to help clean up neighborhoods.
Organizers hope voluntary compliance to the Town of Portland Zoning Ordinance and NYS Code will help ensure a safer, more attractive environment throughout the Town of Portland.
To assist Brocton and Portland residents, large trash day has been scheduled Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the village of Brocton Tool House on Highland Avenue, Brocton.
