Michelle Henry, Chautauqua County historian, speaker for May Genealogical Society meeting
The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society will meet Tuesday, May 21 in the Steele Room of Barker Library in Fredonia at 6:30 p.m.
When the County office building in Mayville was remodeled, old files were found of early County correspondence in the dome of the building. Chautauqua County Historian Michelle Henry’s presentation will show some of this correspondence and how it reflects on the residents and history of the County.
The Society reference and family history room, is open on Tuesdays from 4 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. The History Museum is open the same hours and both are open to the public. New family files and reference material are frequently added.

I’mpower Me Event set for Saturday
Elevation Combat Sports Academy (ECSA), with the help of the Dunkirk JV softball team, will be hosting the second annual I’mpower Me event on Saturday, May 18 at Dunkirk High School.
The day will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. with lunch provided. Proceeds from the day will go towards the ECSA Scholarship fund and the Dunkirk softball team.
Last year’s event brought in 52 girls in grades 4 through 8 for an entire day of classes and sessions focusing on building self-esteem, self worth, and friendships. This year’s sessions include Zumba, POUND, yoga, team building, cooking, art and jewelry. Because of the many requests, this year’s event will be open to girls in grades 3 to 8 who attend any school in the North county.
The cost is $20 per person. Registration forms are being accepted and organizers are seeking businesses or individuals to help sponsor the event.

Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary’s annual rummage sale Saturday
The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary is holding its third annual rummage sale Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Post’s Veterans Hall, 228 Maple Ave., Cassadaga. As you do your spring cleaning, members would appreciate it if you’d remember this sale.Donations will be accepted through today. Sorry, but no TVs, computers/equipment and encyclopedias.
Saturday, the sale is open to everyone to stop and shop. A bag sale begins at 1 p.m. AND … for your sweet tooth, there will be a bake sale that day, too. Questions? Call 595-3145 or 640-2801.
Barker Library presents Nintendo Party on Saturday
Barker Library will host a Nintendo Party on Saturday, May 18 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at 7 Day St., Fredonia. Play Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros for WiiU on the big-screen TV. Bring friends, amiibos and skills. the library provides snacks and controllers. No registration is required. All kids, teens fifth grade and up are welcome.
Collins Public Library presents: Music in the Library Concert Series performer Mark Munzert
The Collins Public Library presents the next performance in its Music in the Library Concert Series today at 7 p.m. This month, guests can enjoy a free concert by Mark Munzert, an award-winning cowboy poet spinning tales of the west. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The library is located at 2341 Main St. in Collins.
Fredonia Food Pantry to be open Saturday morning
On Saturday, May 18, The Fredonia Food Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. until noon at Fredonia Presbyterian Church at 219 Central Ave. The pantry serves the needs of residents of Fredonia, area code 14063, Pomfret, Sheridan, and Laona. All guests receive one or more bags of non-perishable food. Number of bags given out depends on family size.
Sheridan VFW Post 6390 Auxiliary bake sale today
The auxiliary of the Sheridan VFW Post 6390 will hold a bake sale this Friday, May 17, in the lobby of the post located at 2556 Route 20 in Sheridan. Homemade baked goods will be available during the regular fish fry dining hours, from 4:30 until sold out. Proceeds will be used for auxiliary efforts to support veteran and community causes.
All auxiliary members are asked to contribute baked goods which can be dropped off at the post prior to the sale.
