Pomfret hikes license fees

The Pomfret Town Board approved increasing town dog license fees and an additional late fee charge at its November meeting.

Effective Jan. 1, the town of Pomfret dog license fees will be $10 per spayed or neutered dog (a $9 local fee and a $1 state fee) and $20 per unspayed/unneutered dog ($17 local fee and $3 state fee).

In addition to the fee increase, any dog license not renewed by the date dictated by the Pomfret Town Clerk each month, will incur an additional $25 late fee. The late fee will include those dogs not renewed within 2022. (For example, any November or December dog licenses, if renewed in January 2023, will also have the $25 late fee.)

The New York state Department of Agriculture and Markets requires that all dogs must be licensed within the municipality they reside as of four months old. The state mandates each municipality to send it a portion of the fees collected, for the state spay/neuter program. The fees sent each month are $1 for each dog licensed which is spayed or neutered, and $3 for each dog licensed which is not spayed or neutered.
