Sons of Legion meet tonight

The Sons of American Legion Squad 59 will be holding its monthly meeting for April on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Post 59, 156 E. Main St., Fredonia. All SAL Squadron 59 are encouraged to attend the meetings which are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month.

Arbor Day planned for Cassadaga

CASSADAGA — At the Village Board meeting on April 12, Mayor William Dorman submitted the Village’s 2023 Arbor Day Proclamation. Citing the importance of trees for environmental, economic, and aesthetic reasons, the mayor noted, “Whereas trees — wherever they are planted — are a source of joy and spiritual renewal.” Friday will be recognized as the official Arbor Day and the Village, with support from the Cassadaga Tree Committee and the community, will celebrate on Oct. 21. Special guests on this day will be Nate Morey, from the state DEC and Certified Arborist, Lori Brockelbank. Plans for the day also include events at the Cassadaga Library.

Cemetery Association meets Monday

SHERIDAN — The annual meeting of the Sheridan Cemetery Association will be Monday at 7 p.m. for the election of directors and the transaction of business. The Sheridan Historical Society building located at Route 20 and Center Road will be the meeting place. All lot owners are eligible to attend.

City announces brush pickup schedule

The City of Dunkirk Public Works Department announces that brush pickup will begin on Monday in District A. District B will be picked up the week of May 8, District C will be picked up the week of May 15 and District D will be picked up the week of May 22.

Brush must be at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on the Monday of the respective collection week but no earlier than the previous Saturday. City crews will collect each area only once. Brush placed at the curb after the crews pass by will not be collected and will be ticketed as a violation of the City Code and property owners will be prosecuted. Brush should be bundled with string or twine no more than 4 feet long, diameter of no more than 18 inches and shall weigh no more than 65 pounds. Bundles should be placed between the sidewalk and curb but should not be placed near any posts, trees, water or sewer boxes, etc. which could be damaged during removal operations. Brush placed on city property other than the area fronting the respective residential property will be ticketed.

City residents may also drop brush off at the Public Works facility on Lucas Avenue which is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday- Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, excluding holidays. When dumping, note the separate pile for leaves, pine and other woods. Please do not mix.

Library to host ‘Patterson After Dark’

WESTFIELD — The Patterson Society will be hosting “Patterson After Dark” a fundraiser for Patterson Library, on Saturday, May 13, from 6-9 p.m. Tickets are $40 each and available at pattersonlib.org or in person at the library. Featuring food and drink from local wineries, breweries, restaurants and library supporters, “Patterson After Dark” will also include a jazz duo who will provide music in the atrium. Teen volunteers will provide complimentary on-site child care for school-age children of ticket holders, offering snacks, activities and entertainment. Funds raised from the event will directly support library operations. Donations of food and drink or volunteers are welcome.
