Portland fire board
meets Monday
PORTLAND — The Board of Commissioners of the Portland Fire District will be holding its September meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. instead of the usual time of 7:30 due to the change of date for the departmental meeting. The review and audit of bills will take place at 6:30.
CVCS board to gather
on Wednesday
SINCLAIRVILLE — The Cassadaga Valley Central School Board will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the middle-high school multi-purpose room.
Laona church holding
spaghetti dinner
The Laona United Methodist Church will be holding a spaghetti dinner to help with the finances of the parish. It is being held at the church on Wilson Road in Laona, on Saturday Sept. 16 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The dinner will come with spaghetti, salad, roll and butter and a homemade cookie and a drink. The price is by donation. There is a elevator available.
Water District
meeting is Saturday
There will be a meeting of the board of directors for the North County Industrial Water District on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Sewer District meeting immediately following at the town of Dunkirk Town Hall, 4737 Willow Road, Dunkirk. The meeting is open to the public.
German settlers
to be meeting topic
CASSADAGA — The next Chautauqua County Genealogical Society meeting will be held Wednesday, Sept. 20 at the Cassadaga American Legion Post 1280 at 228 Maple Ave. in Cassadaga. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. The speaker at 7 will be local Historian Michelle Henry. Her presentation will be “The Trials and Tribulations of Researching Mina’s German Settlers.” Mina Corners in the Chautauqua County Town of Mina, had a German settlement consisting of several German-Prussian families, arriving in the 1840s.
What can historical records prove or disprove about common assumptions relating to this ethnic settlement? Henry will discuss the records found and what she has learned about the various families who settle the area. The public is invited to attend. Child’s Play
underway at library
SINCLAIRVILLE — Child’s Play, the Sinclairville Free Library’s Early Literacy Program, begins fall sessions on Wednesdays from 1 to 2 p.m. with the following schedule of topics:
¯ Sept. 13 — “Sunflowers” (sunflower paper plate activity).
¯ Sept. 20 — “School Readiness: Counting and Numbers” (counting ladybug).
¯ Sept. 27 — “Apple Time” (apple painting).
Children ages birth to 4 and their caregivers are invited to join Library Assistant Jessica Huling for engaging stories, social play, crafts and songs. This is a time for children to play together while learning important skills. Older siblings are also welcome to attend.

meets Thursday
WESTFIELD — A Chautauqua County American Legion Auxiliary monthly meeting will be at John W. Rogers Post 327, 7579 E. Main Road on Thursday at 7 p.m. All units are encouraged to have a representative in attendance.

Wednesday in city
The Lakeshore Coin Club meets Wednesday at the Dunkirk Elks Club, 428 Central Ave. The members gather at 6:30 p.m. with a business meeting at 7 and a coin auction.
Al-Anon meeting returns Thursday
The Al-Anon meeting at Harvest Chapel Church in Fredonia will resume at the church on Thursday at 6:45 p.m. Those with questions can call 716-969-2395.
