Veterans 4 Christ meet Saturday

BROCTON — This Saturday, Veterans 4 Christ will have their free brunch for veterans, active duty military and guest at Tri-Church Parish at 41 East Main St. Brunch begins at 10 a.m. At this time, Steve Appleby, Curator, Education and Programs, of the Eldred WW II Museum, will be our guest speaker.

From the museum’s website (https://eldredpawwiimuseum.com), their mission is to preserve and interpret the history of World War II, to commemorate the contribution of 40 million Americans that supported the 16 million fighting soldiers during the epic struggle to defend freedom and democracy against the forces of greed and aggression, and to help shape a stronger future for the United States by helping present and future generations understand the lessons of the 20th century.

Appleby is knowledgeable about everything from World War II and an excellent speaker.

Fredonia and Pomfret “Trunk or Treat” event

scheduled

The village of Fredonia and town of Pomfret Recreation Department’s “Trunk or Treat” event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28 beginning at 11 a.m., following the Halloween parade starting at Risley and Temple streets. There will be float prizes for various categories including Most Creative, Scariest and Best Community Spirit. The prizes will be announced at the parade finale in the Gazebo.

Online registration will be available online and should be completed and turned into the Recreation Department Office by the deadline of 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. All community members are welcomed!

The Trunk-or-treat event will include a bounce house, Halloween craft and activities as well as cider and doughnuts. There will also be performances from the Fredonia Symphonic Band and Collage Performing Arts Center. Trick or treating times have yet to be set.

Congregation sets Sunday service

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northern Chautauqua, located at 222 Temple St. in Fredonia, holds a Sunday worship Service at 11 a.m., both at their physical location and on Zoom. For those attending the in-person service, please follow the driveway and park in the lower lot behind the building.

The theme for September is Welcome. On Sunday, members Bill Moran and Diane Clark will share their experience sailing from Buffalo to Dunkirk on the Golden Rule ketch in early August. In addition to sailing, both participated in activities in four different ports when the ship docked. The couple will attempt to put some wind in your sails concerning global nuclear disarmament. If you ever wanted to chart a course out of the dilemma of nine nations with nuclear capability, you can dock right here! They will talk about the threat of global annihilation and how we can set our course with acceptance and hope.

Following the service, join us for coffee, tea, and light refreshments.

Boating class

slated for Oct. 14

LAKEWOOD — The U.S. Coast Guard Dunkirk Flotilla 3-4 will teach the Boat America Class in person on Saturday, Oct. 14. The deadline is fast approaching for all New York boaters to obtain a safe boating training certificate by Jan. 1, 2025. The Boat America class is the nationally recognized course on operating boats and personal watercraft safely. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary course is approved by New York State for its requirement for 8 hours of classroom boating safety training in order to operate power boats and personal watercraft legally on New York Stater waters. Students must be at least 10 years old.

Upon completing the eight-hour class, payment, and exam, the U.S.C.G. Boat America completion certificate and laminated wallet card will be given to the student. The class will be given from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the American Legion Post 1286, 174 Chautauqua Ave.
