Election Day soup meal planned
St. John’s United Church of Christ will be holding a Soup Meal on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 7. The meal will include your choice of a homemade soup, slice of bread, and a small treat at a cost of $5. Meals will be available from 11 a.m. until sold out. Please enter the parking lot from Eagle Street.
Congregation sets Sunday service
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Northern Chautauqua, located at 222 Temple St. in Fredonia, holds a Sunday Worship Service at 11 a.m., both at their physical location and on Zoom. For those wishing to join virtually, visit https://tinyurl.com/caluucnc. Click on “Worship Service” on the date you are attending and scroll down for the Zoom link. For those attending the in-person service, please follow the driveway and park in the lower lot behind the building.
The theme for October is Heritage. On Sunday, members Nancy Jankowski and Karen Taverna will present a service on Samhain. A pagan holiday, Samhain begins on the evening of October 31 and is a time when some believe the veil between the living and the dead is thin.
Following the service, there will be coffee, tea, and light refreshments.

Portland Fire District meets
Nov. 7
PORTLAND – The Board of Commissioners of the Portland Fire District’s monthly November meeting has been changed to Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 pm in the meeting room of the Fire Hall. As always, the public is invited to attend.
Church planning Trunk or Treat
Trunk or Treat will be held at the First Baptist Church in Dunkirk from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Church and school families will park their cars in the large parking lot. Trunks or the backs of their vehicles are opened and decorated. Nothing too scary. Kids can safely walk through the parking lot to collect pre-packaged candy and treats from all of the fun-themed cars. Games, photo ops, and more!

Christmas Sale slated for Nov. 4
PORTLAND — Nov. 4 will be the date for the huge one-day Christmas Sale. It will be held at the West Portland Baptist Church Hall on Route 20.
There will be lightly used Christmas decorations for home, office, or business. Bring your bag, fill up and leave a donation.
This sale will take the place of the Christmas Store. All items must go.
Rabies clinic in
city Nov. 4
The Chautauqua County Health Department has announced a free rabies vaccination clinic. Animals must be pre-registered to receive vaccinations. Vaccinations will be provided free of charge to all dogs, cats, and domesticated ferrets three months of age and older.
The clinic will be on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at the city of Dunkirk Street Department 19 W. Lucas Ave. The clinic is co-sponsored by the city of Dunkirk and Chautauqua County Health Department. Dr. Rebekah Frost will be the attending veterinarian.

There are a limited number of spots available, so pet owners should pre-register online as soon as possible. If you register but decide not to attend the event, please cancel your appointment so the spot is available for another pet. You can cancel appointments via the confirmation email you receive when you register. Walk-ins may be accepted toward the end of the clinic, but are not guaranteed.
Fredonia plans flushing Monday
At 11 p.m. Monday, Fredonia will start flushing water mains and fire hydrants in and around the village. Flushing will be done from 11 p.m. to 7 p.m. to minimize problems with water during the day.
The flushing will take approximately two weeks and during this process, residents may experience turbid water and reduced water pressure. The village recommends that residents check the quality of their water before doing laundry.
