Caregivers

brunch planned

for June 11

The Western New York Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will host a brunch on Tuesday, June 11, for people who are caregivers to those living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

The Caregiver Brunch will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the Dunkirk Senior Center, located at 45 Cliffstar Ct. in Dunkirk. Representatives from the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging will be in attendance.

In addition to refreshments, Julie Whitbeck-Lewinski of Care Patrol of Erie and the Southern Tier will discuss the importance of self-care for caregivers. Participants can also learn more about the many free resources offered by the Alzheimer’s Association, including support groups, education classes, virtual programs and care consultations.

United Senior Citizens to meet Monday

Members of the United Senior Citizens welcomed back President Evonne Hennebery after a long winter absence due to health. The group met May 6 at the Kosciuszko Club where everyone said the Pledge of Allegiance followed by God Bless America.

Everyone then enjoyed a delicious catered lunch of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and vegetables prepared by Chef Jill Hudson, but only after grace was given over the meal.

The group enjoyed socializing followed by bingo which was led by Rosemary Mancuso and Lucy Saeli. Group Tour Director Robin Carr announced the following trips to Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino: Monday, June 24, $39 includes roundtrip transportation, $25 slot play, $5. food credit, raffle and treats. Matinee Shows: John Denver Tribute: Tuesday, July 23, $99 and includes roundtrip transportation, Show, $20 slot play, $10 food credit. The next meeting will be Monday and will feature Chiavetta-style chicken, roasted baby red potatoes, green beans and tossed salad. Food Pantry to be open June 15

On Saturday, June 15, The Fredonia Food Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. until noon at Fredonia Presbyterian Church at 219 Central Ave. The pantry serves the needs of residents of Fredonia, ZIP code 14063, Pomfret, Sheridan, and Laona. All guests receive one or more bags of non-perishable food. Number of bags given out depends on family size.

Legion Auxiliary talks events,

CASSADAGA – The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary Unit 1280 held their monthly meeting at the Legion Post on May 14 with 13 senior members attending, five officers present.

The Chaplain Paula Pattison reported on sending out sympathy and get-well cards to Legion Family members; Unit 1280 hosted a funeral luncheon for a Post 1280 Legionnaire.

Membership chairperson Sally Lawson noted Unit 1280 members is at 99½% for 2024.

Discussion was held on the upcoming Sons of the Legion’s summertime Cruise-Nights that will be held the last Tuesday of the summer months: June 25, July 30 and August 27 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Unit 1280 will be holding their famous Pie and Baked Goods Sales during these Cruise Nights.

The “Boots on the Ground” walk-a-thon went well, with all proceeds going to help Veterans and their programs.

Members voted to donate money to the “Spirit of Girls State” award to be presented to an outstanding Empire Girls Stater. At this point of the Unit 1280 meeting, nominations for Unit 1280 2024-2025 officers were taken. After some discussion, the slate of officers is: President, Ranee Kaus; 1st Vice President Charyle Tyler; Secretary, Carol Baker, Treasurer, Sue DeGolier; Chaplain Paula Pattison; Sgt-at-Arms, Lynn Moeller. Secretary Carol Baker cast one ballot to accept this slate of officers, passed.

The next Unit meeting will be Tuesday, June 11.
