Mayville Depot Museum to host centennial celebration
MAYVILLE – A Centennial Celebration/Grand Opening will be held at the Mayville Depot Museum this Saturday, May 24, from 1-5 p.m. The current brick depot at 16 Water St, Mayville, was constructed 100 years ago, in 1925. The Chautauqua Town Historical Society operates the historical museum. This is its grand opening for the 2025 season. All are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
Historical marker to be unveiled
RIPLEY — The general public is invited to attend the unveiling of the newest historical marker dedicated to General LaFayette’s grand entrance into New York state at Ripley on June 3, 1825. There is a statewide recognition of this special 200th Anniversary of the General’s “Nation’s Guest” return to America. Join Dr. John Hamels, Ripley Town Historian, at the Ripley Public Library on Sunday, June 1 at 2 p.m. at which time he will present the marker, hear from Chris Carosa, author and historian and learn how Ripley played a small part in a huge nation-wide event! Carosa’s book, “History Unleashed: Lafayette’s Remarkable Tour of the Greater Western New York Region” will be available for purchase, and he will hold a book signing in the library to follow.
Memorial Day service, parade set in Forestville
FORESTVILLE — A Memorial Day Parade and veteran’s service will be on Monday starting at 10 a.m. in downtown. The parade will include the Forestville American Legion, Forestville Fire Department, Forestville School Marching Band, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and miscellaneous vehicles. The parade will conclude at the American Legion grounds, 6 Cedar St., and the service will be held. The service honors all veterans and members of the military. Retired Marine Corp Master Sgt. Brian Schneider will be guest speaker and Doug Allen, the former singing voice of Buffalo Sabres, will sing a few patriotic songs. There will be a traditional 21-gun salute and the Forestville Food Pantry will provide hot dogs and refreshments immediately following the service.
Steam station picnic June 3
Dunkirk Steam Station Picnic will be Tuesday, June 3, at the Large Pavilion in Point Gratiot. It will start at noon.
Historical Society open on holiday
SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Historical Society will have open hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.
Visitors are welcome to look through the many exhibits in the Society’s Museum, including A sesquicentennial review and World War II veteran newspaper display. A new train display will also be presented.The Historical Society building is located at 2720 Route 20, at the intersection of Center Road.
Visits to the Museum may also be made by appointment, by calling 716 960-9026 or 716 673-1822. The Sheridan Historical Society always welcomes new members. Meetings are held on the last Monday of the month, and information may also be obtained by calling the numbers listed.
Several events are planned for the summer months, including two speaker events in June and the annual band concert at the Sheridan Municipal complex in July, where friends and neighbors can support the Historical Society by purchasing refreshments.
Flower Pounding Class set for June 9
SINCLAIRVILLE — The Sinclairville Free Library is offering a Flower Pounding Class with Brenda Nickerson on Monday, June 9 at 5 pm. Participants will learn which flowers and/or leaves work well and how hard to pound to get the desired results. Cost per person $10. Seating is limited.
