seniors looking ahead

BROCTON — Brocton-Portland Seniors met Aug. 26 with President Margaret Jagoda welcoming 54 members and leading Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was held followed by Clara Wilder with a prayer of thanks. The committee of the day members thanked were Barbara Crandall, Elaine Frederickson, Dolores Fairbanks and Linda Riley.

June and July secretary reports were read and approved with corrections. The treasurer’s report was approved by Tom DeJoe and Rosie Giambra. New members welcomed were Bill Kubasik, Pat Kibbe, Charlotte McDonald and Marilyn Flint. Clara Wilder clarified situations — ending with the food thing, all was passed by everybody! Robin Carr shared tour information — Amish dinner Sept. 13, an October Fall trip to Wellsboro and tour to Lancaster, Pa., in December.

President Margaret Jagoda asked for a show of hands to change the December meeting to Tuesday, Dec. 30 for a New Year Party instead of a Christmas one on Dec. 16. This was a yes vote.

Installation of officers will be held at that time. Birthdays for August were Tom DeJoe, Dorothy Derby, Deb Messere, Denise Spiller, Louise Torrey. Door prizes were won by Rose Miller, Mary Matteson (2), Evonne Hennebery, Pat Kibbe and Louise Torrey. Ten folks won the raffle. Centerpieces made by Linda Riley went to 10 happy winners. Sept. 30 is the next meeting with committee Chuck Cichon, Tom Hebeisen and Clara Wilder. The program will be a surprise for members that bring a dish to pass and their own personal table service.

Fred Basket lists openings

On Saturday, Sept. 20, Fred Basket previously known as The Fredonia Food Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to noon at Fredonia Presbyterian Church at 219 Central Ave. Additionally, it is open Wednesdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Guests may only receive one helping a month. These new hours hope to serve those who cannot attend on Saturdays the food pantry serves the needs of residents of Fredonia, ZIP code 14063, Pomfret, Sheridan, and Laona. All guests receive one or more bags of non-perishable food. Number of bags given out depends on family size.

Calligraphy workshop

planned Sept. 17

CASSADAGA — The Seymour – Cassadaga Library will be hosting a calligraphy workshop on Sept. 17 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A demonstration in lettering arts, this interactive, hands-on event will allow participants to use various styles of pen and inks. This demonstration aims to determine a series of classes in selected disciplines to be taught in the future, so all interested individuals are encouraged to attend.

Cassadaga resident and calligrapher, Patricia Greenstein, will be leading the event. She has studied calligraphy for over 13 years, and has completed multiple classes led by master penmen and calligraphers. She is a member of the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH), as well as the Pittsburgh Calligraphy Guild.
