Apple Butter Fest set for Oct. 11

WESTFIELD — The West Portland Baptist Church, 7081 E. Route 20, Westfield, will be hosting its 11th annual Apple Butter Festival on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will have old-fashioned kettle cooked apple butter available for a donation and there will be more than 40 vendors offering various sale items including food vendors.

The festival will take place rain or shine. All profits generated from the festival will be donated to the Brocton/ Portland Food Pantry which is operated on the church grounds. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

NCCS planning chicken barbecue

Northern Chautauqua Catholic School will hold a drive-through only Weidner’s chicken barbecue on Oct. 12 at Holy Trinity Church, 1032 Central Ave., Dunkirk, from noon to 3 p.m. or sold out. The $15 cost includes a half barbecued chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and a vegetable. Prepaid tickets will only be guaranteed until 2:30 p.m. Purchase tickets at The Lord’s Vineyard office, 1030 Central Ave., Dunkirk, or after most weekend Masses. Proceeds benefit NCCS.

United Senior Citizens plan ahead

Thirty-one members of United Senior Citizens met Sept. 8 at the Falcon Club, 341 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk to enjoy each other’s company and a delicious lunch consisting of meatloaf, chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, fruit salad and apple cake for dessert.

After saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing God Bless America together, everyone bowed their heads for a prayer of thanksgiving.

Member Tom DeJoe circulated a sheet for everyone to sign to be put in a special birthday card provided by member, Robin Carr, given to Evonne Hennebery for her 75th birthday featuring President Trump delivering birthday wishes.

Members who also celebrated birthdays in September were: Kathy Kamery, Delores Pitts and Patricia Timko.

Carr announced the following trips: Grand Canyon of the East, Oct.10, to include a covered wagon ride, Fall colors, chuckwagon lunch and Leonard Harrison State Park Overlook. Cost $149.

“Christmas City-USA” to Bethlehem, Pa., Dec.10-12. Travelers will enjoy Christkindmarkt, Christmas Putz, Bethlehem Night Tour, Longwood Gardens, the Kemerer Museum of Decorative Arts and Moravian Museum. It includes two nights lodging, a deluxe motor coach with stops along the way, two breakfasts, dinner and all the beauty of Christmas. The cost is $549. Reservations by Sept. 30. Payment by Oct. 22. The Wheeling, W.Va., Island Casino trip is announced by Dunkirk Seniors and will take place Nov. 12 to 14. Cost is $365 and reservations/payment will be taken by Nancy at 716-366-7530.

After trip announcements, Bingo was called by Lucy Saeli and Rosemary Mancuso with many members staying for the fun.

The next meeting will be Oct. 13 and the meal will be: herb roasted pork tenderloin, baked chicken, smashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and tossed salad. Dessert will be a surprise. Send a $15 check made out to United Senior Citizens to Hennebery, P.O. Box 706, Dunkirk, NY 14048 by Oct. 4.

The United Senior Citizens is a senior citizen non-profit organization that embodies socialization over lunch. The organization meets the second Monday of each month at noon (except January and February) at the Falcon Club, 341 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk.
