American Legion Post 59 notes upcoming events

American Legion Post 59, 156 E. Main St., Fredonia, will hold a Weidner’s chicken barbecue on Sunday, Oct. 12 from noon to 4 p.m. or until sold out. The $15 meal includes one half chicken, dinner roll and two sides. Presale tickets can be purchased at the Post.

It also will hold a flag retirement ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at 161 Chautauqua St., Fredonia, weather permitting.

United Church of Christ free community meal

GOWANDA — The Trinity United Church, located at Erie Avenue and Park Street, will host a take-out only free community meal at the Park Street entrance on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. or gone.

The menu is hot meatball sub, baked beans, vegetable and cookie. Free will donations are appreciated but not necessary. All donations are used to help other organizations in the Gowanda community.

Drive East Main to Railroad Avenue and then down Park Street, following the signs, or walk up. Everyone is welcome.

The next meal is Nov. 8.

Fred Basket lists hours for month

On Saturday, Oct. 18, Fred Basket previously known as The Fredonia Food Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. until noon at Fredonia Presbyterian Church at 219 Central Ave. It is also open Wednesdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Guests may only receive one helping a month.

These new hours hope to serve those who cannot attend on Saturdays the food pantry serves the needs of residents of Fredonia, ZIP code 14063, Pomfret, Sheridan, and Laona. All guests receive one or more bags of non-perishable food. Number of bags given out depends on family size.

Lakeshore Humane Society schedules monthly meeting

The next general membership meeting of the Lakeshore Humane Society will take place at the Lakeshore Humane Society Adoption Center, 431 E. Chestnut St., Dunkirk, on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome. See www.lakeshorehumanesociety.org or call 716-672-1991 for information.

Fall colors arrive in region

Beautiful peak fall colors will continue to spread through the Adirondacks and Catskills, and are expected to arrive in some parts of the Chautauqua-Allegheny and Finger Lakes regions this weekend. This is according to the field reports from volunteer observers for the Empire State Development Division of Tourism’s I LOVE NY program.

Locations with the most significant foliage change this weekend will include Newcomb, Lake Placid, Wilmington, Malone, Tupper Lake, Lake Pleasant, Old Forge and Wanakena in the Adirondacks; Delhi, Colchester, Hunter, Windham, Tannersville and Highmount in the Catskills; Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes; and Salamanca and Little Valley in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region.
