Council meeting
Tuesday canceled
Tuesday’s Dunkirk Common Council meeting was canceled.
In a notice sent to the OBSERVER, “technical issues” were blamed for the cancellation. The mayor told the OBSERVER that as she understood it, one of the members of council wanted to attend the meeting remotely using Zoom. However, City Hall was having technical difficulties with the computer network connection.
Wdowiasz also stated it was the council’s decision to cancel the meeting.

Author’s talk
highlights Houghton
Michigan-based author Deborah K. Frontiera will speak about her new book, “Douglass Houghton: Michigan’s Pioneer Geologist, Doctor, and Teacher,” published in January. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. The event is at noon Saturday at the Barker Library & Museum.
In preparation for the upcoming exhibit commemorating the bicentennial of the Fredonia Academy, the Barker will host an author talk on an influential graduate of the Academy, Douglass Houghton.
Houghton (1809-1845), Michigan’s first state geologist, grew up near what is now Houghton Common and attended the Fredonia Academy. SUNY Fredonia’s science building, Houghton Hall, was named for him. Readers can follow Houghton’s trail as he explores the unknown wilderness of both peninsulas in the 1830s and 1840s to discover the potential resources of a brand-new state.
