Area authors to be at Chautauqua Institution

CHAUTAUQUA — Calling all bookworms. Don’t miss the Authors Among Us Book Fair on Sunday, July 12 from noon to 2 p.m. on Bestor Plaza at Chautauqua Institution near the Smith Memorial Library. Remember Sundays are free admission days. Just stop by the main gate for a free pass.

Eighteen area authors will have books available for sale and signing, including Anne Dimock, Marorie Maddox, Clara Silverstein, Alissa J. Sammarco. Sonya Sutton, Jason Irwin, Richard Sipe, Samuel “Skip” Halpern, Dawn Swanson, Judy Shuler, Martha J. Rogus. Deb Pines, Nadja Maril, Rick Pullen, Tom Herr, Estelle Rauch, Ann E. Wallace and Catherine D’Agostino.

Vegetarian Society plans picnic

MAYVILLE — The Chautauqua Vegetarian Society’s summer meeting will be held at Lakeside Park in Mayville at the pavilion. The Veg Society will provide vegan hotdogs, buns, condiments, and our usual green salad. Please bring a vegan picnic dish to share.

Feel free to bring lawn games to play on the grass or card games to play in the pavilion. The society will not be making tea, so bring your own beverage.

The picnic will take place on Sunday, July 19 from 1 to 3 p.m.at the pavilion. It will be a Vegan picnic with hot dogs. Please bring a vegan dish to share (no meat, dairy, or eggs) and a beverage for yourself.

The cost is $2 if you bring a dish to share and $6 without a dish.

Reservations are needed. Please call 716-753-7761 to indicate you’re interest. RSVPs by the end of the day Thursday are appreciated.

Craft workshops being planned

JAMESTOWN — The Busti Historical Society invites all to learn about historic skills and crafts at their upcoming workshops. Beginner Book Binding is being taught Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Society meeting room, 3443 Lawson Road. Students will learn the basics of bookbinding and hand stitch their own books.

Everyone will leave with four completed books. The cost is $25 per person, $20 for Busti Historical Society members. Please email bustihistorical.edu@gmail.com to register or call 716-483-3670. Pre-registration is required. Students 12 to adult are welcome, please no young children.

August’s craft class on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 2-4 p.m., is Beginner Weaving. Learn the basics of weaving and make a small weaving project to take home.

September’s craft class on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. is Beginner Naalbinding Coaster Making. It is also known as toothbrush rugs. Students will make a coaster or set of coasters from upcycled materials at the workshop to take home.
