Parks Commission meets Thursday
The Chautauqua County Parks Commission meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Chautauqua County Airport. The public is welcome to attend.
Social Dancing classes to begin Fall classes in Social Dancing will begin once again at the Collage Performing Arts Center at 214 Eagle St. in Fredonia beginning Monday, Sept. 7 and Thursday, Sept. 10.
Classes meet from 7 to 9 p.m. through November.
Dancing has always been an important part of our lives throughout the good times and the more challenging ones. It is an activity that encourages attention to detail, good memory skills, physical dexterity, an awareness of the music and above all patience and a sense of humor. And it provides an opportunity to meet new folks and engage in an enjoyable social activity.
Becoming proficient in Social Dancing in the style of American Ballroom is an interesting and worthy challenge which when mastered will provide a lifelong interest and source of considerable enjoyment.

Scholarship opportunities in patriotism announced
The John T, Murray Post 1017 and Auxiliary announce the scholarships for 2026-27 for the Voice of Democracy audio essay contest. The theme is "What a Veteran has taught me about America," a three-minute audio and written essay open to all students in grades 9 to 12.
The Patriots Pen is open to grades six to eight with the same theme. Both must be turned in by Oct. 30. Both are open to local schools and private institutions . For applications, go online to www.vfwauxiliary.org/scholarships or contact Pat at 716-341-1328.
The Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest and 3D Creative Patriotic art contests are available to students in grades nine to 12. Entries will be judged on patriotic theme, creativity and technique. Must include a photo of their art and at the post by March 28.
Illustrating America is an art contest for kindergarten to eighth-grade students. The contest has three grade groups, K-2, 3-5, 6-8. Entries are judged on Patriotic theme and technique. Entries must be at the post by Dec. 1.
All contests are open to all schools and no name of the student or school is to be used in the essay.
