Choir plans dinner fundraiser Oct. 17
The Northern Chautauqua Community Choir is holding their fall fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 17 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Edwards Waterhouse Inn, 71 Central Ave., Fredonia. The Wiedner’s chicken dinner will include a quarter chicken with baked beans, coleslaw and a roll. Apple crisp, pumpkin cake, and local honey from “Sweet Bee & The Fox” will be available for purchase while supplies last.

Peak season for leaves in state
The transition to stunning fall colors quickened over the past week and is expected to bring pockets of peak foliage to six of New York state's 11 vacation regions this weekend. Joining the Adirondacks, which has already seen some peak conditions, localized peak colors will pop up in parts of the Capital-Saratoga, Catskills, Central New York, Finger Lakes, and Chautauqua-Allegheny regions. This is according to the field reports from volunteer observers for the Empire State Development Division of Tourism's I LOVE NY program.
Locations with the most significant changes will include Wilmington, Newcomb, Saranac Lake, Benson and Old Forge (Adirondacks); Stratford and East Nassau (Capital-Saratoga); Colchester, Stamford and Windham (Catskills); Cooperstown and Sharon Springs (Central New York); Cortland (Finger Lakes); Salamanca (Chautauqua-Allegheny); Springville (Greater Niagara); Alexandria Bay (Thousand Islands-Seaway); and New Paltz and Kingston (Hudson Valley).
Brocton Portland Seniors meet, talk events
Brocton Portland Seniors met Sept. 29 at Brocton American Legion with President Anita Calcaterra welcoming 47 attendees and new members Pat and Jean Tate.
Maureen Davis shared Prayer of Thanks and Doug Chatley led the Pledge of Allegiance. Committee of Day thanked were Margaret Jagoda, Brian Stanton, Linda Riley and Barbara Crandall.
Oct. 10 is the annual Apple Festival at West Portland Church from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Oct. 17 is Sweetest Day at Brocton Central School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Legion also is now serving meals Tuesday evenings 4:30 to 7:30.
Clara Wilder is designated contact for cards signed to veterans and seniors. Rita Bennett and Duane Hemmis motion to pay for three cakes, approved. Shelves in cupboards have been cleaned and labeled. Thank you to Margaret, Rita and Jim and Duane Hemmis.

Birthdays celebrated for September were George Travis, Chip Winchell, Shirley Wolnick, 93, Rose Brumagin, 89, Bill Kubasik, Linda Janes, Rita Stonefoot, Evonne Hennebery, Bill Hipwell, Ruth Durogi. Door Prizes went to Deb Gillis and Judy Loomis.
Ten raffle winners and sunflower centerpiece drawings were held with hand painted rocks shared. A Chinese Auction was held following the pot luck delicious meal.
Oct. 27 is Halloween and there will be prizes for costumes. Catered by the Legion, the meal includes meat loaf, gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetables, roll and dessert. The Band ” Check 1.2.3.” will be the program with a Halloween contest. Member cost is $10 to sign up by Oct. 20 for the meeting by calling Judy Moffett at 716-680-1011. Door is open at 10 a.m. for social fun with meeting starting at 11.
