County reports 24th COVID-related death, hospitalizations jump

The number of people reported in Chautauqua County hospitals with COVID-19 jumped Wednesday based on information released by the county Health Department.

Hospitalizations went from the 25 reported Tuesday to 36 on Wednesday. That’s in addition to the 24th COVID-related death and 43 new confirmed cases in the county.

Of the new cases, which include data from Tuesday but released the following day, 10 involve people living in the Jamestown zip code; nine in Fredonia; eight in Dunkirk and three in Brocton. Several zip codes reported one or two new cases as well.

The number of active cases dipped for the second consecutive day after reaching an all-time high of 441 this week. As of Wednesday, there were 385 active cases.

Meanwhile, the positivity rate, the number of confirmed cases of COVID compared to the number of tests administered, has hit 9% in Chautauqua County.

In neighboring Cattaraugus County, 51 new COVID cases were reported Tuesday evening, bringing the total to 1,851. There remains 627 active cases in addition to 31 in the hospital and a seven-day positivity rate of 8.1%.
