Region’s hospitalizations decline; Cattaraugus notes 33rd death tied to virus

Thursday’s Western New York hospitalizations hit a new high since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Friday, however, the numbers decreased.

According to the New York Forward website, regional hospitalizations dropped by 13 patients to 535. The site also noted that 74% of the beds were filled with 53% occupied in Intensive Care Units.

Cattaraugus County’s Health Department noted 33 were hospitalized as of Friday with 65 new cases announced over the two days of Thursday and Friday. The county has 1,732 total cases with 580 active. There have been 1,119 recoveries.

The department also announced a 33rd death. A 24-year-old male experienced a cardiac event and was unable to overcome his illness despite aggressive medical treatment.

Chautauqua County is not updating its dashboard on weekends. Through Thursday, there have been a total of 2,303 cases.
