The Chautauqua County Department of Health on Tuesday recorded 11 new COVID-related deaths.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the new fatalities are linked to nursing homes, as was the case late last week when 23 new deaths linked to those facilities were announced. The county noted on its dashboard and in a news release then that the deaths were over a several-week span; however, no note was included in Tuesday’s update.

To date, 88 county residents have died to due to complications associated with the virus. According to county data, four involve people between the ages of 40 and 49; three between 50 and 59; seven between 60 and 69; 22 between 70 and 79; 37 between 80 and 89; and 15 over the age of 90.

As of Monday, 31 residents of nursing homes within the county have died with the virus, which continues a recent spike in the past few weeks. Four of the deaths involve residents of Absolut Care of Westfield; 21 at Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab in Dunkirk; five at Heritage Green in Greenhurst; and one at Heritage Village in Gerry.

The health department also announced 38 new virus cases, believed to be the fewest in a one-day report since Dec. 15. There have been 6,290 total confirmed cases during the pandemic.

Of the newest, eight are from the Dunkirk zip code, five in Fredonia, five in Jamestown, three in Brocton and five in Westfield.

There are currently 406 active cases as well as 40 people with the virus in the hospital and 1,790 people in quarantine..

In Cattaraugus County, 23 new COVID cases were recorded Monday evening, which marks 3,599 to date. There were currently 415 active cases, as well as 3,112 total recoveries, 44 people with the virus in the hospital and 71 deaths.

Elsewhere, Warren County has now gone three straight days without a double-digit increase in new COVID-19 cases. That hadn’t happened since late November.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health announced one COVID-related death, bringing the county’s toll to 82, and seven new cases for a total of 1,959 in Tuesday’s release.

The last time there were three days in a row with single-digit increases was also the last time there were four straight — Nov. 21, 22, 23, and 24 — with 18 total cases over the four days. The county’s surge began on Nov. 25 with 22 new cases. There were double-digit increases every day – including a single-day high of 80 on Dec. 20 — from then until Jan. 4.

The department’s statistics indicate a dramatic drop in the number of COVID-positive patients at Warren General Hospital. In Monday’s reporting, there were 27 patients. As of Tuesday, the number was down to seven.
