Child-sized doses of COVID vaccine to be available locally

Parents or legal guardians wishing to have their children between the ages of 5 and 11 receive a COVID-19 vaccine have some options locally.

After clearing two hurdles this week, the child-sized doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine have been made available. Pfizer already has shots for children over the age of 12.

“After rigorous review, scientists and medical experts have deemed COVID-19 vaccination safe and effective for everyone 5 years of age and older,” said Christine Schuyler, county public health director, in a statement Thursday. “Vaccination is the best way to protect our children, friends, and families from COVID-19 infection, and the potentially severe disease, disability and death that the infection can lead to.”

In Chautauqua County, a clinic will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Jamestown Community College physical education building. The clinic will be for parents or guardians who wish to have their child — between 5 and 11 — vaccinated from the virus.

According to the county Health Department, “any minor seeking vaccination must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian whose consent will be obtained at time of vaccination. If a parent/guardian is unable to accompany the child, he/she may designate another adult to consent on their behalf. Such designation must be in writing and must include the name and date of birth of the child, the name and signature of the parent/guardian, and the name of designee. Photo identification will be required.”

A child vaccination clinic will also be held Saturday, Nov. 13, at Steele Hall at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Those interested in taking part are asked to pre-register at chqgov.com.

Vaccination clinics for children over the age of 12 as well as adults are also scheduled at JCC and SUNY Fredonia beginning next week.

The county Health Department said child-sized doses of the Pfizer vaccine are also available at the following pharmacies:

• CVS, 10 S. Work St., Falconer

• CVS, 175 E. Fourth St., Dunkirk

• Rite Aid, 1166 Central Ave., Dunkirk

• Rite Aid, 811 N. Main St., Jamestown

• Wegman, 945 Fairmount Ave., West Ellicott

• Walmart, 10401 Bennett, Fredonia

According to the Associated Press, with the federal government promising enough vaccine to protect the nation’s 28 million kids in the 5 to 11 age group, pediatricians’ offices and hospitals began inoculating children. Schools, pharmacies and other locations plan to follow suit in the days ahead.

Many pediatricians’ offices expected strong interest in the shots at least initially, but health officials are worried about demand tapering off. Almost two-thirds of parents recently polled by the Kaiser Family Foundation said they would wait or not seek out vaccines for their kids.
