Once again, Western New York has the highest rate of positive tests for COVID-19 in New York state.

According to numbers released Saturday, our region’s seven day rate is 9.05%. Other region’s facing challenges numbers include Long Island at 8.73%; the Finger Lakes at 8.26%; and Central New York and the Mohawk Valley at 8.2%.

In terms of hospitalizations, there are 497 beds occupied in Western New York through Thursday and 99 in intensive care units. Those numbers are down from 514 and 101 on Wednesday.

“This is not like the beginning of the pandemic. We are prepared for the winter surge because we have the tools at our disposal,” said state Gov. Kathy Hochul. “Getting vaccinated, getting the booster and wearing a mask are critical to avoiding getting seriously ill from COVID-19, so don’t take a chance. We will continue to work with local partners to make vaccines, boosters and testing more widely available. Let’s all celebrate the holiday season with our friends and family safely this year.”
