ELLERY — A person was killed Monday afternoon at the County Landfill in an incident Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone described was an accident.

Few details were immediately available.

Volunteer firefighters from Sinclairville were called to the landfill, located within the town of Ellery, around 1:30 p.m. for a report of a person injured. Fire officials arrived and reported serious injuries.

A county paramedic was also called to the scene, and later a county coroner was summoned.

Quattrone later confirmed there was a fatality, describing the incident as an “accidental death.” The sheriff said he was at the scene with investigators.

Several trucks could be seen stopped at the entrance of the weigh station at the landfill. No one was being allowed beyond that point.

More information will be released when it becomes available.
