Jamestown crews respond to fire, explosion at building

Portions of a single-story commercial building in the city of Jamestown collapsed after fire broke out Thursday.

Firefighters were summoned to 255 Blackstone Ave. around 4:10 p.m. for a report of a propane tank explosion. Smoke and flames were then spotted coming from the property, home to Transmission Pros and Valpro Sanitary Supply.

A battalion chief on scene told The Post-Journal that crews arrived to find flames and heavy smoke coming from the transmission shop. Soon after arriving, a portion of the east end of the building collapsed.

Everyone was reported to have made it out; there were no initial reports of injuries.

Off-duty firefighters were called to help, and members of the Jamestown Police Department and Board of Public Utilities also responded.

The Jamestown BPU said efforts to battle the blaze would likely result in discolored water to customers on the east side of the city for 12 to 24 hours. “Hydrants pull water through lines quickly, stirring and discoloring water,” the BPU said.
