The New York State Police is continuing its investigation into a crash involving a train that killed a 63-year-old Dunkirk man late Monday morning.

The collision between a CSX train hauling three tankers and a pickup truck occurred on Temple Road, between Route 5 and Willow Road, in the town of Dunkirk around 11:45 p.m. The crash forced the truck — which sustained significant driver-side damage — about a half-mile down the tracks.

The lone occupant of the truck was identified by the state police as William D. Miller, who was pronounced dead at the scene by a Chautauqua County coroner.

Police were assisted Monday by firefighters from West Dunkirk, Fredonia and Forestville, along with county EMS.

The crash remains under investigation, Capt. Eric Balon said.

Monday’s fatality involving a train is the second to occur in about a month in Chautauqua County. On April 8, a woman died after being struck while walking on the tracks in the village of Westfield.
