Council mentions COVID’s impact on Dunkirk High sports

For the second time this season, the Dunkirk Marauders varsity football team has called off a game due to COVID-19 issues.

City Councilmember Marty Bamonto announced the postponement of Friday’s home game against Pioneer at Tuesday’s Common Council meeting. Bamonto represents the Second Ward, which includes Dunkirk Junior-Senior High School.

Bamonto also mentioned during the workshop for the meeting that three Dunkirk girls’ soccer varsity games have been canceled this week due to COVID-19.

Friday’s game has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. The Marauders previously had to call off their season opener, which was set for Sept. 3 at Kenmore East, due to COVID-19 problems. That game was cancelled entirely.

If the schedule holds, the Marauders will now have to play three games in nine days next month. Their next game is now set for Friday, Oct. 1, when the team visits Olean and its venerable Bradner Stadium, built next to the Allegheny River in 1925. They are now scheduled to play Pioneer at home the following Tuesday, with another game at Karl Hoeppner Field set for Saturday, Oct. 9 against East Aurora.
