Info sought in missing person case from 1976

Judith Threlkeld was last seen March 8, 1976, walking home on Central Avenue in Silver Creek after departing the Anderson-Lee Library.

It’s been more than 46 years since Judith Threlkeld was first reported missing.

The case, largely forgotten going on four decades with little information available online regarding the woman’s disappearance, is receiving a public boost from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office. A Facebook page, “Unsolved Chautauqua,” has been established in the last few days to highlight open missing person cases and unsolved crimes. It follows the establishment of a new unit within the Sheriff’s Office comprised of two part-time investigators to go over open cases with a fresh set of eyes.

Among those cases is the disappearance of Threlkeld, then a 22-year-old when she was last seen March 8, 1976, walking home on Central Avenue after departing the Anderson-Lee Library. The missing person case was investigated for years by the Silver Creek Police Department without success.

In June, the Sheriff’s Office Unsolved Crimes Unit received information about Threlkeld while investigating an unrelated homicide. What the information contained was not disclosed, but it did prompt a fresh look into the 46-year-old missing person case.

On the day she was last seen in Silver Creek in 1976, Threlkeld was reportedly wearing blue jeans, a khaki shirt, a blue sweater, a navy blue suede coat and snow boots. She also was carrying a brown purse.

Anyone with information regarding Threlkeld is asked to call the Unsolved Crimes Unit hotline at 716-753-4578 or send an email to unsolvedchautauqua@sheriff.us
