Ripley traffic stop leads to meth, weapons charges

RIPLEY — A traffic stop around 8 p.m. Tuesday has led to drug charges for a pair of Chautauqua residents.

Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle for failure to keep right on Burton Road. While interviewing the driver of the vehicle, deputies observed a drug pipe on the floor of the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle resulted in deputies locating approximately 70.91 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, and $1,467 in U.S. currency. The driver, Alexander K. Latta, 27, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, failure to keep right, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and unlicensed operation.

Latta also had an arrest warrant for failure to be in court. The passenger, Megan Hermann, 31, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.

Chautauqua County Narcotics Investigators were able to develop information from this traffic stop that led to a search warrant at Latta’s residence at 4316 Potter Road. Narcotics investigators along with Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office deputies executed a search warrant on the residence on Wednesday. As a result of the search, investigators found an assault rifle, a firearm and a high-capacity magazine loaded with .223 ammunition. Latta was additionally charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Latta and Hermann were transported to the Centralized Arraignment Program at the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Jail.
