Fire destroys house on Nevins Street

A vacant home in the city was destroyed in a Thursday morning blaze.

The Dunkirk Fire Department was dispatched to 428 Nevins St. at 3:06 a.m. Upon arrival, crews found a single family one-story structure with heavy fire throughout. There was an immediate fire exposure threat to three exposures on both sides and rear of the structure on fire.

The house was vacant at the time of the fire but a subject was found and escorted out of an adjacent shed on the property. The subject was not injured.

Hose lines were stretched and the bulk of the fire knocked down from the exterior. Crews made entry to confirm there were no occupants and extinguish the remainder of the fire. An emergency demolition was ordered.

Chautauqua County Fire Investigators were called in and determined the cause to be an incendiary.

There was one minor injury to a firefighter who remained on duty. There was assistance from the East Dunkirk Fire Department and Chautauqua County EMS at the scene. City Code Enforcement was also on scene.
