Strong winds, snow expected in weekend return

Snow and wind are expected to return to Western New York this weekend.

A winter storm watch with “heavy lake effect snow possible” is in effect from 1 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Monday. The alert includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming and southern Erie counties.

According to the Buffalo office of the National Weather Service, 7 inches of snow could fall over the weekend, with “with significant blowing and drifting snow possible.”

Along with the snow, wind gusts could top 65 mph.

“Travel could be very difficult to impossible during the weekend,” the Weather Service said. “Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.”

In addition to the winter storm watch, a high wind watch was in effect through Saturday night. The watch included all of Western New York.

Southeast winds were generally expected between 25 and 35 mph, with gusts much higher in some locations.

Strongest winds will occur Saturday, which the Weather Service said may cause tree damage and power outages.

The arrival of snow and wind come following a strong wind storm that swept through Chautauqua County this week. The storm, which primarily impacted the north county, left more than 5,000 National Grid customers without power at one point.
