City man charged after having stolen pistol in Wright Park

A 25-year-old Dunkirk man is facing charges after having a stolen pistol in the area of Wright Park on Sunday night.
At approximately 7 p.m., Dunkirk police received a call reporting a subject armed. Officers arrived and located a subject matching the description given and attempted to stop him.
The subject then ran from officers into the lake and appeared to discard an item in the water. Officers detained the subject and identified him as Kareem T. Caldwell. Officers then searched the water where Caldwell was and eventually located a pistol and loaded magazine.
The pistol, a Sig Sauer P365, was reported stolen out of the Town of Ellicott a month prior. The area Caldwell was in while in illegal possession of the firearm was heavily populated with families and children and included a playground area. Caldwell was transported to police headquarters where he was booked and locked up on charges of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm in a sensitive location, criminal possession of stolen property and tampering with physical evidence.
Caldwell was arraigned Monday and remanded to county jail on $50,000 bail.
