Name released in Mina officer-involved shooting
A 66-year-old man has been killed by a Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputy after an exchange of gunfire after officers responded to a domestic incident on Wednesday in the town of Mina.
According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday the department received a call of a domestic incident at 2900 Mina French Creek Road. Initial response had two deputies who were both on scene by 3:55 p.m. Upon arrival at the residence deputies encountered an armed subject who was outside the residence with a shotgun who allegedly fired off one round from the gun at that point.
According to a news release issued Thursday, the subject, Mark W. Bemis, pointed the weapon at a deputy on various occasions. The deputy gave several verbal commands to put the weapon down which were all refused.
There were several rounds fired in which one deputy suffered non-life-threatening wounds to his hands and Bemis was also struck by rounds fired by the deputies.
First aid was administered to Bemis by an additional deputy who arrived on the scene until Emergency Medical Service arrived. EMS from local volunteer fire departments and paramedics from Chautauqua County EMS responded and rendered aid to Bemis and the deputy.
Bemis was pronounced dead at the scene after rescue efforts. The deputy was transported to Hamot Hospital and later released. The investigation is continuing.
