Pomfret indicates interest in nuclear facility

Pomfret Town Supervisor Dan Pacos

Pomfret Town Supervisor Dan Pacos supports a site near Van Buren Road as a home for New York state’s nuclear power project.

Pacos announced at the December town board meeting that he “indicated to the county” the town is interested in hosting a nuclear facility at the site.

The land is on both sides of Van Buren Road, bordering the railroad tracks to the east, and is already owned by Dunkirk Power LLC — the same front company for NRG that owns the site of the decommissioned power plant in the city of Dunkirk.

The land was reportedly used as a dump site for ash waste from the power plant, which was a coal-burning facility.

“I think it would be a good fit,” Pacos said. “There’s also infrastructure in place along the lake.”

The site is zoned for industrial use. “I did not want to fill that all with solar (power generating arrays) or something like that. I wanted something that could generate jobs,” Pacos said.

Gov. Kathy Hochul stated in June that she wants to boost upstate New York’s power infrastructure with new nuclear plants. The city of Dunkirk has also expressed interest in hosting a nuclear facility, at the decommissioned power plant.

Starting at $3.50/week.
