City crews battle King Street fire

A basement blaze at 170 King St. in Dunkirk had the attention of responders around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, crews heard smoke detectors activated and found smoke coming from a rear door leading to the basement of the two story, two-unit home. Firefighters ensured everyone had safely exited the building and quickly extinguished the fire, containing it to the area of origin. Dunkirk Fire Department received assistance from the Dunkirk Police Department, Fredonia Fire Department, East Dunkirk Fire Department, Chautauqua County Emergency Services, City Code Enforcement, City Department of Public Works, National Grid and National Fuel. Crews were on scene for approximately 90 minutes. There were no injuries. The occupants of the house were being assisted by the Red Cross. City and Chautauqua County Fire Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire.
