Vehicle pursuit in city leads to numerous charges

A vehicle pursuit early Sunday morning has led to charges in the city of Dunkirk.

At approximately 3:56 a.m., Dunkirk Police observed a vehicle strike a parked vehicle on the 400 block of Washington Avenue. The officer attempted to conduct a vehicle and traffic stop on the vehicle, however the driver failed to comply.

A vehicle pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, the operator of the vehicle struck a tree and light pole of a local business. The operator then drove through a field, owned by the city of Dunkirk, causing damage to the field, dragging a tree struck previously. The pursuit ended when the operator struck a handrail along the lake front causing said vehicle to overturn and come to a rest on its passenger side at North Main Street and Lake Front Boulevard.

The operator was taken into custody without incident and identified as Ramon Ramos. Ramos was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital via Dunkirk Fire to be medically evaluated. He was then released back into the custody of patrol, transported to police headquarters for further processing and released due to bail reform.

Upon further investigation it was determined Ramos had also caused damage to two other parked vehicles on the 400 block of Washington Avenue. Ramos was charged with seven counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and a plethora of vehicle and traffic tickets.
