Lake snow warning issued for county starting early Thursday

A lake-effect snow warning has been issued for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and southern Erie counties starting early Thursday by the National Weather Service. Eerily similar to last year, the forecast calls for heavy lake effect snow with total accumulations at 12 to 20 inches in the most persistent areas. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph will produce blowing and drifting snow. The warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Saturday. JCC Total Fitness to close to public in February

Silver Creek mourns death of student

SILVER CREEK — Sunday night, a Silver Creek High School student unexpectedly passed away. Superintendent Dr. Katie Ralston shared the news “with profound sadness” via social media Monday morning. Conor Prince-Rivera, a 12th grade student at Silver Creek High School, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Ralston said. Pets perish in morning city blaze

Dunkirk firefighters battled a blaze Sunday morning on Lord Street where a number of pets perished. Officials say the Dunkirk Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a window at 106 Lord St. around 7:21 a.m. Upon arrival, crews found smoke and fire on the first floor in the rear of the home. Firefighters brought the fire under control using two hose lines and tools. The house suffered significant interior damage.
