Ashley Madison hacking reveals state government e-mail accounts

The recent hacking of extramarital affair website Ashley Madison has revealed thousands of email addresses registered to federal and state agencies, including some in New York state.

According to Capital Confidential, a number of email domains with “ny.gov” in the address were posted on a list at Pastebin.com. The list includes accounts from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the New York Power Authority and the Department of Taxation and Finance, among other agencies.

Assemblyman Andy Goodell, R-C-I-Jamestown, said the notion of state employees logging into Ashley Madison on state time and using state-owned computers is “wrong on so many levels.”

“State employees should be focusing on state work on state time, and should only be using state equipment for legitimate state purposes,” Goodell said. “My recommendation to the agencies that might be involved is that they take appropriate disciplinary action.”

Goodell also recommended that the state implement systemwide restrictions on computers so that certain websites cannot be accessed.

“Computers are equipped with parental controls that can be used to keep kids from inappropriate sites, and unfortunately, it appears that that type of control would be appropriate on statewide computers as well,” Goodell said.

State Sen. Cathy Young, R-C-I-Olean, said those proven to have used government email addresses for Ashley Madison should not be left off the hook.

“Using a governmental email address for such purposes would be inappropriate and inexcusable,” she said. “The State Inspector General should launch an immediate investigation. If these allegations are proven to be accurate, the offenders should lose their job.”

Goodell acknowledged that the vast majority of the state’s 200,000 plus employees are honest and dedicated people. But, he said, “there will always be a few of them that are dishonest or doing inappropriate actions.”

Out of nearly 15,000 email addresses linked to government and military domains – according to The Hill – only a handful were registered to agencies and authorities in New York state on the Pastebin list.

These included three from nypa.gov; two from omh.ny.gov and one each from nyserda.ny.gov, nystate.gov, cornwallny.gov, labor.ny.gov, mail.nysed.gov, omig.ny.gov, opwdd.ny.gov, panyny.gov, tax.ny.gov, thruway.ny.gov and townofislip-ny.gov.
