Presentations of the first Courage and Honor Scholarship, the Fredonia Veteran’s Scholarship and a record six Enrollment and Student Services Veterans Scholarships will highlight the 10th annual Veteran’s Remembrance Ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

The ceremony, at 3:30 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room, honors all past and present veterans and is free and open to the public.

Tory Boyce, a senior Computer Information Systems major from South Colton, who served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps, will receive the inaugural Courage and Honor Scholarship, valued at $750.

Established by President Virginia Horvath, the scholarship will support a student who is currently serving in any branch of the military or who was honorably discharged. It is open to students in all majors who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and may be renewed. President Horvath will also deliver the Veteran’s Day address.

Jeremy Coon, a Psychology major from Fredonia who served honorably in the Army, will receive the Fredonia Veteran’s Scholarship, valued at $1,700.

Recipients of the $500 Enrollment and Student Services Veteran’s Scholarship include:

¯ Tylah Arthur, a senior Communications Disorders and Sciences major from Brooklyn, whose mother is currently serving in the U.S. Navy;

¯ Ryan Dustin, a junior Criminal Justice major from Falconer, who is currently serving in the U.S. Army Reserves;

¯ Mikayla Maiava, a junior Theater Arts major from Watertown, whose father is currently serving in the U.S. Army;

¯ Joshua Peters, a junior Chemistry major from Jamestown, who served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps;

¯ Jason Seiberg, a senior Exercise Science major from Bemus Point, who is currently serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserves;

¯ Thomas Seifert, a senior Accounting major from Hamburg, who served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps.

The Division of Enrollment and Student Services typically awards four scholarships, but was unable to narrow the field of candidates following interviews. Six students will each receive $500 scholarships.

The JROTC Color Guard from Dunkirk High School will post and retire the colors. Associate Professor of Music Angela Haas, a member of the School of Music Voice faculty, will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The ceremony is hosted by the Veterans Recognition Committee and the Fredonia Student Veterans Club.
