Craigslist fraud costs Evans man $1,250

EVANS — An unnamed Evans man fell victim to a wire transfer scam after attempting to sell an Amish-made dining room set on the website Craigslist for $1,500.

The victim was contacted by a woman identifying herself as “Sherry,” who said she was interested in buying the set. She paid an extra $1,250 for the victim to wire to a company for shipping. A certified check for $2,750 was deposited into the victim’s account and he withdrew the $1,250 and wired it to the shipping company.

The certified check was subsequently recalled, leaving the victim $1,250 short. The victim attempted to call “Sherry,” who allegedly made excuses about why the funds were reversed. The victim filed a report with Evans Police, who left a message for “Sherry.”

If found, police intend to charge “Sherry” with fourth-degree grand larceny and second-degree scheme to defraud. Law enforcement agencies typically caution not to wire money to anyone you do not know.

Starting at $3.50/week.
