Village authorizes transformer purchase following outage

BROCTON — Following electric outages in the village of Brocton last month, members of the board of trustees recently voted to purchase three reserve electric transformers.

Electric lineman for the village, Joe Majkowski reported to board members that the cause of one of the outages was a transformer at the Jamestown Plastics building that shorted out the electrical system in the village. Noting to the board members that an immediate replacement transformer should be on hand in case of the same emergency event, board members resolved to purchase the equipment, totaling just over $9,000, which Brocton’s Mayor Richard Frost confirmed was available in Majkowski’s department line item.

The mayor publicly thanked Majkowski and village crews for their quick response during both outages. Village Clerk Scott Jagoda presented the board members with a thank you note from Morse Funeral Home Director Sue Merle, who happened to have calling hours at the home during one of the outage events. She thanked village crews for responding quickly and keeping her business running smoothly, while at the same time, tending to the outage.

In other matters, board members voted unanimously to appoint Jim Dolce as Deputy Public Works superintendent, under the direction of Supervisor Ken Becker, with no change in the amount of the stipend paid to him bi-annually as in previous years serving under retired Streets Department Supervisor Tom Allen.

Becker is filling a unique role for the village, while serving as Portland’s Town Highway Supervisor, after Allen’s retirement left a vacancy that proved difficult to fill. Brocton’s Village Trustee Carol Horlacher commended Becker, adding “I’ve heard great things about your supervision.”

The supervisor responded that supervision of Brocton’s employees is “going smoothly — the guys are great to work with.”

In other matters, Mayor Frost publicly wished happy milestone birthdays to Brocton residents, Julia Schrantz (90) and Frank Nicosia, who recently celebrated his 100th.

Board members approved a resolution Wednesday night reappointing Cynthia Ferguson to the position of Summer Youth Recreation Program Director.

Members of the board will meet again on Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. from Village Hall.

Starting at $3.50/week.
