Money matters: Free finance seminars slated this fall in Silver Creek

SILVER CREEK — The Community Education division of the Silver Creek Central School district is offering a variety of finance-based classes open to the public starting via its fall 2018 session. There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is necessary for all classes and ensures the classes will be held.

The offerings begin in September and conclude in December. All classes will be led by instructor Brett Komm, a financial services representative from Foresters Financial Services, Inc., and will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the high school library.

Wednesday, Sept. 26: New York State Teachers Retirement System seminar

Attendees will receive an explanation of retirement and Social Security benefits, retirement benefit payout options. Although this seminar is listed as NYSTRS, it does offer information relatable to the NYSLRS and CSEA members. If you are a member of another organization and would like to attend, Brett can answer questions that may relate to your specific situation or he can follow up privately after the seminar.

Tuesday, Oct. 9: Financial Wellness: Life Insurance Workshop

Participants will learn about how much life insurance they need, what types of life insurance they should buy as well as options and benefits.

Thursday, Oct. 25: Savvy Social Security Planning

What Baby Boomers need to know to maximize retirement income: Will Social Security be there for me? How much can I expect to receive? When should I apply for Social Security? How can I maximize my benefits? Will Social Security be enough to live on in retirement?

Thursday, Nov. 8: Savvy IRA Planning for Baby Boomers

The following topics will be covered: What type of retirement account is right for me? Can I still contribute to a retirement account and if so, how much? When do I need to take withdrawals and how much do I have to take? How are my IRA withdrawals taxed? How does my IRA fit into my overall plan? What happens to my IRA when I die? How can I minimize taxes so I can spend more of my hard-earned money?

Wednesday, Nov. 14: Savvy Social Security Planning for Women

Geared toward women, this course will answer the following inquiries: How can I maximize my Social Security benefits? Are there survivor benefits if my husband or ex-husband dies? If I get divorced, are there divorced-spouse benefits? How can I best coordinate retirement benefits with my husband? What Social Security planning should I consider before remarrying?

Thursday, Nov. 27: Savvy Medicare Planning

Learn how Medicare enrollment periods work – and what you need to do to avoid late-enrollment penalties. You will learn ow much you can expect to pay in health care costs after going onto Medicare, how Medicare works with private insurance to provide comprehensive coverage, why most people pay too much for private insurance and how you can avoid excess costs, and why you must plan for higher health care costs in retirement.

Thursday, Dec. 6: Riskonomics

Determine your retirement income needs, strategies for generating income to meet those needs and make sure you do not outlive your retirement assets. The biggest risks retirees face today will also be discussed as well as the most common retirement pitfalls and taking retirement distributions.
