Wednesday night explosion heard near steel plant

Dunkirk Fire Department Chief Michael Edwards said Roosevelt Avenue residents reported a loud explosion and saw smoke near the steel plant on Wednesday night after 11 p.m.

Edwards said, “We checked the entire steel plant and surrounding area and found nothing.”

He explained that occasionally when electrical transformers blow, they sound like an explosion and that this was possibly the case on Wednesday night. “I can’t say for sure that this is what happened, but there was no fire in the area and no injuries.”
