The John T. Murray Post 1017 Auxiliary 2018-2019 scholarships for students are announced

The John T. Murray Post 1017 Auxiliary 2018-2019 scholarships for students have been announced. They include:

“Voice of Democracy” — The theme is “Why my vote matters,” for grades 9 through 12. The format is a recording of a three- to five-minute essay. Nothing over or under can be accepted. Get information and an application at youthscholarships@vfw.org.

“Patriots Pens” for grades 6 through 8 students. The theme is “Why I honor the American Flag.” The format is an essay of 300 to 400 words, typed (nothing over or under). The Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pens submissions must be received by the Auxiliary by Oct. 26.

“Young American Creative Patriotic Art” – artwork must be on canvas or paper. It will be judged on patriotic theme and technique.

Something new this year is for grades kindergarten, first and second grades. This is a scrapbook, which could include an American flag, parades, military, etc. This can be done as a classroom or on an individual basis. Scrapbooks must be turned in by Feb. 2, 2019 to be judged. Only one winner will go on to Department judging. An index card needs to be attached to the back of the scrapbook, with the name of the student or grade.

Poster/collage contest for youth in the third, fourth, fifth grades. This contest involves a patriotic theme. It must be turned in by Feb. 2, 2019. Only one entry will advance to Department for judging. An index card with the child’s name and grade on the back must be included.

John T. Murray Post 1017 Auxiliary is also looking for schools to make Christmas cards for the Blue Star Moms. Nice notes are requested, with only first names and no addresses. These are needed by Nov. 19.
