The Women In Corrections Committee of the Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility donated $330 to the John W. Dill Unit 434 American Legion Auxiliary, Brocton, New York to sponsor a local high school junior to attend the Empire Girls State 2019 Program. The donation will cover the cost of sending one high school junior from the Brocton Central School to the American Legion Auxiliary’s Empire Girls State to be held June 30 through July 6 at SUNY Brockport. This leadership program is designed to have Girls State citizens participate in forming a democratic type of government similar to the structure of the New York State government. This mythical 51st state is divided into 10 counties with three cities in each county and is based on a two party system, the Nationalist and Federalist. All citizens are urged to run for office using political campaigns, debating, and crafting bills.

Empire Girls State is limited to 360 participants from the 62 counties in New York State. The Chautauqua County American Legion Auxiliary is fortunate to be allotted 13 seats for the best and brightest young women. American Legion Auxiliary Units across the county are currently interviewing candidates to attend this year’s program.

Mrs. Carole Link, the John W. Dill Unit 434 American Legion Auxiliary’s Chairperson for Empire Girls State, accepted the donation from Correction Officer Holley Locket, Lakeview’s Women In Corrections Committee Chair Person and Jane Morgan, Office Assistant II, Lakeview’s Women In Corrections Committee Member.
