Jail fatality name revealed

OBSERVER Staff Report

The 28-year-old inmate at the Chautauqua County Jail who died while incarcerated has been identified as Gregory Gallaway of Dunkirk. Gallaway’s family reportedly spoke to WIVB TV in Buffalo earlier this week, confirming he was the 28-year-old fatality previously reported in area news outlets.

The OBSERVER spoke to Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone in a phone call, and while Quattrone did not confirm the name, he verified that further information would be released following an autopsy in Buffalo.

“The body was taken to Buffalo for an autopsy,” said Quattrone of the current situation. “We will have more information after that point.”

In addition to the autopsy, Quattrone also confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.

“Investigation is still underway,” Quattrone stated. “We’ve been taking statements from those individuals working that date and time, as well as those who had been in contact with the individual prior to his arriving in the jail. As of right now, we’re waiting for autopsy results before releasing any further information.”

In the interview with WIVB, Gallaway’s family stated that prior to his arrest, Gallaway was facing the brunt of an addiction to unspecified narcotics. Allegedly, Gallaway was involved with the Dunkirk City Drug Court and turned himself in after realizing he was going to fail an upcoming drug test.

An outside investigation by the Gallaway family’s personal lawyer revealed he may have had a serious medical issue prior to his committal to jail. Suicide has yet to be ruled out as well, although, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release: “There is no suspicion of foul play.”

The day after Gallaway turned himself in, Thursday, April 11, he was found dead in his cell at the Chautauqua County Jail. “I don’t have too much to add,” Quattrone said, closing out his comments. “Nothing else to add at this time. We’re still treating this matter with privacy.”
