City questions Central Avenue striping

Central Avenue was paved last year and since then one thing has been missing, the lines.

At Wednesday’s Public Safety meeting, Dunkirk Police Chief Dave Ortolano, voiced his concern over the missing markings.

“I’ve talked with the city engineer about this, because I’ve had a lot of complaints. I have also had issues myself with Lucas and Central as well as Millard Fillmore and Central, because the lanes are not delineated for the turning,” Ortolano said. “Apparently, they’re talking with the project engineers right now. For the life of me, I cannot understand how anyone can engineer a road project and not put the proper striping for the road back in place after it’s done.”

Ortolano was concerned as he stated that people are going to be happy they have bike lanes, just not going to have anything else.

“I’d rather see turning lanes and a double yellow line,” Ortolano added. “Right now we have no lane usage for anything.”

According to Fourth Ward Councilman Mike Civiletto, the contract stated the county was to pave and to line Central Avenue, but the city was to do anything extra on top of that, including the bike lanes; this was later confirmed by City Attorney Richard Morrisroe.

Thursday evening saw the addition of a faint dotted line down the middle of Central Avenue, hopefully a sign of lines to come.

Starting at $3.50/week.
