A Jamestown home was condemned, and charges are pending against several area residents after a check found the property to be “unfit to inhabit” for them and six children living there.

Police were called Tuesday around 11:12 a.m. to the 100 block of Forest Avenue for a report of a small child in the road. The child’s mother, 21-year-old Kaitlyn Seekings, found a group of good Samaritans caring for her child and became irate, Jamestown police said Wednesday.

An inspection of Seekings’ home, located at 47 McKinley Ave., found it had no running water for about three weeks for the four adults and six children residing there. In addition, officers found several containers of urine with feces and garbage in “various rooms throughout the home,” police said.

The property was later condemned after the city Department of Development was called.

Child Protective Services placed the children in the care of family members.

Seekings was taken into custody on charges of disorderly conduct and endangering the welfare of a child. She pleaded not guilty at arraignment and is scheduled to appear back in court Oct. 1, online court records indicate.

“The quick action of the bypasser surely saved this child from serious injury as it was found unattended in the roadway,” said Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department. “The condition of the home situation also led to charges as well as it was found to be deplorable and unfit to live in. Any person can contact us directly or via our tips line if they are aware of other situations where children are living in homes that are unfit. We will immediately investigate such complaints and will work with CPS to ensure that any involved children are properly cared for. Adults who live in uninhabitable homes with children are committing a crime and can be held criminally responsible for these conditions.”

Charges against three other adults are pending, police said Wednesday.
